When I used to work in claims we allowed choice of repairer, but I always recommended our own guys. They gave our members higher priority and we as the insurer guaranteed the workmanship for life.
Yes it worked out cheaper for us, but from my own personal experience the quality of work was excellent. We pumped hundreds of cars into these shops. They cared more about maintaining our relationship than some guy off the street that comes in once or twice in his lifetime.
+ cheaper cost for insurer means premiums don't balloon more than usual
An insurers preferred repairer is not always a bad thing.
