This kind of apathy by the majority of motorists toward braking and steering performance in an emergency or bad situation is why we have so many accidents.

Most (especially franchised) tire sellers will sell you what they've been directed to by industry pressures or the product they make the most money from - usually cheaply obtained Chinese (or other) crap.

Seriously? That's your attitude? No matter how careful a driver is, they will be confronted at some stage with that one moment where they may only be saved by the grip they have to either stop or steer out of trouble - or die/kill someone through cheaping out or not caring what the tire fitter supplied.
I have never had the ability to safely test the "breakaway" limits of the tires I've had on my cars. But no matter which car I've owned, I have always made effort to do some research to ensure I have a tire fitted that has been tested and shown to have good braking and steering response.
I believe there should be more stringent testing, certification and control of tires sold and fitted to ensure they meet a minimum standard to stop some of the shockingly bad product being sold.
