Thanks everybody - as usual, very helpful.
(Still on the hunt for something originally without power steering, with great mechanicals, appearance less important. Neither capable nor wanting to learn, nor wanting to put the time into fixing something up - even by travelling across town to the local MX5 mechanic. Value more important than price.)

Re: A restored 1989 NA: opinions please
Lets be realistic- restoring , renovating cars is time consuming, not always fun, expensive and often much of the work is not carried out by the owner- no shame in that- working people in demanding jobs may not have the time or have other priorities. Having a car already done is often much cheaper and you get to drive it straight away. . Many of the restored cars ones see around the traps are rarely painted or trimmed by the owners in fact doing it all yourself is the rare occurrence. I know guys who will not do the body and paint themselves albeit they might present the stripped down shell to the painter but a professional job gets the results and can impact on the value of the car. Pulling a car to bits and presenting items to a pro is still a lot of work.
Incidentally people ask a price but it does not mean thats what is paid at the end of the day.

Quite a few NAs on sale at the moment with high 'asking' prices. As noted by Mr Morluck I expect when they do sell most will have changed hands at a more reasonable price.

If you're suggesting buying a car for so called investment, you'll need to be just a little bit more discerning.

No I wasn't suggesting an investment. I was just making the usual distinction in buying and selling between value and price. See http://keydifferences.com/difference-be ... value.html for example. On analysis, perhaps was unnecessary to say, as we all implicitly buy on value rather than price?

In relation to value as per your link, I think utility is in the eye of the beholder, so I try to assess value from a worth perspective. In other words, in relation to others for sale the same or very similar over a recent period of time, or at the time if a purchase needs to be more immediate, which is of course best avoided, but sometimes necessary.
