MX-5 SPAM: A turbocharged NB MX-5 released in Australia in 2002. Widely appreciated by the motoring press due to it's impressive power and response, which was what the public had been wanting for some time.

The original name was shortened on release to the MX-5 SP due to the similarity to a certain canned food, annoying emails and thread posts on online forums, and the car's proclivity for belching smoke from the exhaust and bending rods after about 80,000 km.

The full name was never made public as Mazda Australia feared a backlash from the public.

My understanding is that cost was never an issue with the SP (...supported by the outrageous price tag)... but weight reduction might have been a consideration
