Do MX-5 drivers ever check the market when selling?

Do MX-5 drivers ever check the market when selling?

Just witnessed another example of it. I won't say whether it's an NA, NB or NC, or the actual price involved. I'm not trying to belittle any single person.

But what I can say is I've been watching the market really closely for two, going on three months. This particular seller is $9,000 over where they need to be.

It's not small change and, even if they peel $9,000 off their price, they could be a good couple of months before they actually sell at that price, if they sell at all.

What is it about MX-5 drivers that makes them think they have an uber rare collectable and checking what others are selling at is for wimps? Bizarre. And it's always been this way.

(Disclaimer: Before some of you chime in to be contrary with, "They can charge what they want..." yeah, great, I get that. But that's not what I'm focussed on here. I'm trying to ascertain why.)

Because they're turkeys.

When I see NA6's for sale for $10,000....
Maybe if its mint conditional all original with 2,000kms then it would be worth something to a collector...

I dont think it is just related to MX5 owners.

Previously we had a bloke frequent the forum that had a NA6 with 160K on the clock. It was an orginal and untampered version. In 2013 is was worth $16K according to him. All other NA6s in 2013 where going for $4K-$7K.

But you see it everywhere. A few weeks ago I saw a 97 Mazda 323 Astina with 90K on the clock, asking $14K. I wouldn't pay that for a 2010 MAzda 3 with 90K on the clock.

Im just going to have a guess

The Red NA at CTS in Sydney? - If that was a few grand cheaper id consider it just to throw in the garage

They are worth what people are willing to pay for it, thats all it comes down to

This is why I havnt sold my se, with 210 on the clock I would be lucky to get $10 000. Then you see people asking drug and kidney money for the same sort of milage, these adds seem to go in a week or two. Not sure if stupid people are paying extraordinary prices or the owners are realiseing there stupidity.

Nah, Regie, even though I'm not trying to single out any particular car... it's not that one.

I was doing some more searching a moment ago... this seller is several thousand over an identical car (which is overpriced itself) but which has 40,000 less km on it.

They just don't look at what else is out there, I swear. Why do they think people will pay more, for less?

Why, supply and demand!

Why, the market determines the price.

Why, setting a high price indicates that there is a possible emotional attachment or indifference to the market. Simply no urgency and if it sells it sells.

I see it with everything, not just cars. It's a mentality some people have.

If their buying, don't want to pay anything and will screw down as low as they can get.
But same person selling thinks they can get top dollar.

As someone looking for a mx5 I think people put too much love money into them, which i understand but still.. How can someone with a straight face expect 11-14k for an 01-03 model with 100-130k on it with damage.. One I looked at had been scrapped at the rear quarter paint scuffed and panel damage, at least 2-3k of panel work. Immaculate I could understand but a lot of them are anything but..

I'm the first to say how awesome these cars are but it's a bit silly, it's not just mx5's it's pretty much any car one the market. At the end of the day you can ask say... 7-9k above others selling the same cars and it may sell or it will sit for three months and not move then when the price is adjusted it will get attention

I think the best I guess deal is, is when the seller and the buyer both feel a little burned if you know what I mean.

I often see this sort of thing when the seller is not really committed to selling their car. Imagine the story: wifey demands hubby must sell the old car in the garage that never gets used but hubby secretly wants to keep it forever. So hubby lists it with a stupidly high price. Win/win if it sells or not.

I honestly wonder why people are in relationships like that.

Well said.

I think the psychology is like a gambler who thinks they'll be the one to hit the jackpot against the odds, most people are delusional about things that impact them directly.

It's also a trick dealers use to give buyers an inflated ego about how much their car was worth as a trade-in. But they don't factor in or ignore how much they overpaid for the replacement.

And the same happens with insured values. Companies earn more in premiums by over-insuring on car values. They've done their sums and balance total losses against that extra income.
