I identify them by whats on them:

NA6 1989-1993
No power mirrors, 1.6lt motor, little brakes, smaller/weaker diff 4.3ratio (and half shafts and drive shaft), 1.6lt spec clutch+flywheel, usually has uglier rear numberplate garnish.

NA8 1993-1997
Power mirrors, 1.8lt motor, larger brakes that 1.6, good diff 4.1 ratio, 1.8 spec clutch/flywheel, usually has nicer rear numberplate garnish

NB8A 1998-2000
Bye bye popup headlights, same brakes as NA8, similar diff as NA8 4.1ratio, slightly improved 1.8lt motor,1.8 spec clutch/flywheel, Orange rear indicator (uglier of the NB tail lights), slightly uglier door trims and centre console compared to NB8B

NB8A 10AE 1999
same as NB8A, but with 6spd, 3.9ratio diff gears, chrome wheels, bilstein shocks.

NB8B 2000-2005
Nicer front end, sharper headlights, 1.8 with VVT motor, 3.6ratio diff, 1.8 spec clutch/flywheel, larger brakes than NA8/NB8A as standard in AUS (they were optional in other countries), 6spd gearbox, nicer door trims and interior centre console, later years NB8B's had OBDII, factory strut brace

The NB6 is missing, although not available in Australia. It was available in Japan and elsewhere from 1997 to 2005 I believe, but I am not sure of months or the letter used after the 6, but I guess NB6A, NB6B, NB6C??

A 1.6 was available in Japan, the NB6C. This is opposed to the NB8C which they call all variants of the 1.8L NB. Different countries use different naming conventions (at least in common use) even when it comes to model codes unfortunately.

Thanks for all your input so far.

I was thinking only about Australian versions and the month of introduction.

There is always this thread which gives a good general breakdown of the various models.

Just clarifying, that it is the Na8 that has the ugly rear garnish ;)
