Windows won't go down on a NA6

Hi all,

First off I own a Japanese imported 89' NA6 with power windows. The other day I had the LHS window down 2/3 of the way and realised it would no longer go up/down when switch was engaged.

If switch is pressed, you can hear the motor engage but other than that nothing really happens. And with continuously driving over humps and what not the window starts to gradually drop lol.

I'm guessing the whole regulator/motor set up needs to be replaced but not entirely sure. Has anyone had this issue before and can confirm? Anyone know best options of getting a new setup (is ADM NA6/8 compatible? :S) or have one I could purchase? (NSW)

Thanks all  :NA6:

Very common problem.
Info on fixes very readily available online if you simply search.

I have. Maybe I didn't phrase the question properly.

I just wanted a general opinion/confirmation (always good to have before blowing $$) on whether it's wiser to replace the whole unit (reg/motor, reliability sake?) as I've seen some threads where people have felt that replacing the wires only and reconnecting to motor etc is quote 'asking for trouble'. Although found a youtube video that doesn't make it seem too complicated.

Also if there were any significant differences from the JDM and ADM as well as NA6/8.

No real difference in JDM and AUS.

If the motors work it could just be snapped wire, an easy fix.

However based on the age of the car the issue could be caused by a number of factors:
1. Worn guide rollers
2. Lack of lubrication
3. Incorrect window guide adjustment
4. Switches that have too much carbon build up.

I would suggest pull off the door card and have a look at what the issue is.

Yep, most likely one of the ends has come off the cable - happened on my old '89 NA6 driver side window in '97 & then passenger side in '98. Replaced both just after they happened & sold the car in '04 with no further issues. Not a complicated job, but it can be a fiddly job reassembling when the spool has the new cable wound on it.
Sure some people might think it's 'asking for trouble' just replacing the cable, but what are they basing their thinking on? And if it is 'asking for trouble' where do you draw the line? Some people are risk averse & some people take risks - depends which one you are.

Thanks for the guide link and yeah, would depend a lot on the capabilities of the individual.

Just finished removing the motor and regulator now and just as mentioned, one of the cables had rusted and snap. Decided to go the route of replacing the cables opposed to whole unit.

Will look to source the components in the week. Thanks all! :D
