NA Original Ignition Key - what's it look like?

Just got a new key cut at Mr Minit for my '93 NA. Only ever had the one key so thought it overdue for a spare.

However it got me thinking that I don't know what the original NA key looked like as the one that came with my car is also clearly not original.

This is my key.

A-ha so that's what it looks like. Your regular key is the same as the one that came with my car. Maybe it was the originally supplied second key?

IIRC my old '89 NA6 second key wouldn't open the glove-box or boot, but can't remember what it looked like. One of the two keys was the same style as the original on the right above, & I assume there was a obvious way to distinguish them.

It is a aftermarket cut key. If that is all you have, then you have no originals.

Simple keys like these can be duplicated from photos, I'd be careful about posting pics of them... Even just blur the pattern or something.

Reasonable advice, but if someone was really after your MX5, and they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't need the pattern to the key.

I have been taught some, ummm, techniques by some, ummm, semi professionals, at least for cars built up until the nineties. A good :? car thief with the right combination of luck, tool and experience can walk up to a car and get into it as fast as the owner with the correct key can, and sometimes start it just as quickly. And 20th century Mazdas are at the easy end of the spectrum.

As above, stealing an NA is a 5min job for someone with no experience, seconds for someone who knows what they're doing.

NB is a little harder with the chipped keys, but still not that difficult.

Key 905-875 in pic above was spare key in my old '89 NA6.

My '89 came with two keys with a black plastic bow as per the photo Jessegroves posted. One has a number etched into it on the base of the bow (as per his photo) and the other does not. I presume master and regular.

The number is likely the Mazda key number.

If you lose the key you can quote that number to Mazda and they can cut a matching key without needing an original. (Well, back in the day anyway, not sure if it's they still do that)

Yes they still do it, but it is a little tag attached to the keyring with a 4 digit number on it.

You're quite right Clubman, for a while there were 2 key types. Mazda supplied a key for day to day use that operated everything. They also had a service key that would open the doors and start the car but not open the glove box, consul or boot. This allowed you to leave the car for service without the repairer helping themselves to anything you wanted to stow away. The main key had a square shape head and the service key had a rounded head.
I have a full set of NA6 locks with both original keys if anyone was interested in doing a full replacement.
