Should not be a problem to find some business locally who can get it going. Try the local Bursons or like businesses who always have connections on local businesses. Auto elects s/be listed on the web. I had 3 Datsuns a 1500 Fairlady with the funny back seat a 1600 Fairlady which I never got to drive and I bought a new Datsun 2000 low windscreen model which was bad timing for a young bloke with no money. Another Club I am involved in had a number of Datsun sports cars and the 2000 always seemed to be dríven hard - great cars and a long way ahead of MGB in the day. A pal has a 260Z which is a different bit of kit to the convertibles- buts its still a classic.

This is a job that I've been putting off for 15 years on my car. It's just a question of putting the time into it. My aftermarket system has about a dozen black wire pairs. Each pair intercepts one wire. I just have to find each intercept, cut out the black wires and resolder and resleeve the original wire.

Your original problem may not be related to the immobiliser. If I apparently have spark and fuel then my next question is about when it is firing. A timing light on the engine turning on the starter with all the plugs removed will tell you if the spark is occurring near the top of the compression stroke. If that looks right then I check for compression. Cam belts can slip.

Thanks all for discussion. I'm pretty happy to try most things on my cars - only way to learn. However the electrics bother me as I'm red/green colour blind! Not a good starting point for wiring!

While I'm not 100% sure it is caused by the immobiliser, I'm more than 99% sure it is :D There was no power to the fuel pump and a I located a faulty relay in one of the immobiliser modules.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, so far I'm impressed. I emailed an alarm specialist last night and they replied. I spoke with them this morning and the unit will be replaced with a basic one that replicates the existing one for $290 total cost! I could go much snazzier, but the car is scarcely out of my sight these days and only dríven 2 days a week (a classic insurance condition). I won't give the name of the company yet but if this all goes as expected I certainly will as a happy customer.

Replacement for $290 all up with them coming to you is good - hopefully it sorts the issue completely.

In the off chance that the replacement immobiliser doesn't resolve your issue, and given all of the other investigation you have done so far, I would suggest checking the igniter. Many of the symptoms you have described can also be attributed to a non-functioning igniter.

It sits over on the drivers side wheel arch, near the radiator overflow bottle.

I shorted mine by unplugging the ECU without disconnecting the battery first :(

Thanks, I will check this as well. I need a new alarm/immobiliser anyway and am impressed at the low cost - but I should wait until it is done before getting carried away.

For the princely sum of $290 I again have a car that works and with a new alarm/immobiliser system. If you are in Sydney and need a new alarm I would be happy to recommend Leon of Security in Motion. He worked on it for a couple of hours removing the old one and installing the new. Better him than me. Apparently the old one was a Brandt (sp?) which were supposed to be the bee' knees decades ago and the higher spec one that mine was used in WRX's and were rubbish and caused endless problems. Leon seems to have spent decades removing them.

Now I'll be bale to go on the Datsun Sports Owners run on Sunday :D

Thanks again to everyone who offered advice.

Regards,

Tim

Great result.
MCM just removed their WRX STi immobiliser - they all tend to fail over time.
