It was a progressive list, at that stage he'd be wanting more power
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Cam, one of my aims was to keep the car legal. It would be much easier to gain power etc via ECU upgrades, boost controllers etc, but i don't want Mr Plod pinging me when he pulls me over. The hose mod s technically illegal, but very hard to see. everything elseon the car is ok except the ride height, and i do inted to fix that shortly.

Most of us found the std suspension too rolly in hard conering and very skittish under hard braking, hence the number of us upgrading. Having lived with Konis and Kings for a while I am keen to sample teins and bilsteins - I find mine fairly harsh in ride, but love the cornering ability and stability under brakes. If you look at Mania's SP replica it sits at std road height on teins and is obviously handling very nicely, and I would love be able to drive over speed humps again.

I chose the guru because the price was right (thanks Sidewinder!) but have nothing but praise for it. I have no experience with the alternatives, but they all seem to get the job done. I would much prefer to have an lsd than not.

T pice mod is a no brainer and reversible in minutes. ECU changes are a matter of choice, but whatever you buy must be backed up with an experienced tuner to set the car up and look after it for you, unless you are very keen and patient enough to DIY. Also remember that lare power increases add wear and tear to all components so maintenance will be more expensive. Over 160Kw you will run into clutch dramas sooner or later. Mine is running 147rwkw and is just right for daily driving IMHO.

L.S.D and suspension are most important.

Speak to Daniel at Mx5 Mania. He installed the S.P Motorsport kit on my S.E, (Sorry now my brothers S.E :frown: )

154rwkw. Very tractable and the car has always been used as a daily driver. It really is something special.
You'll find that if you put their Cold Air Box which sits behind the left hand fog light and draws air in from the front grill and the turbo back 2.5 inch exhaust, you'd be very happy!!!!

Sounds sensational too!!!!

I'm not sure if the ECU on the S.P is different from the S.E, but the standard computer can cope in an every day driving scenario. If you are going to do any track days you'll definatly need a piggy back or a new ECU.

Cheers.

In capitals to get this through once and for all:

THE SP CAME STANDARD WITH A COLD AIR INDUCTION AIRBOX AND A 2.5" MANDREL BENT STAINLESS STEEL HIGH FLOWING EXHAUST.

Geesh.

if your happy with the suspension leave it. i have teins and they are great but it does make it a harsh ride.

i'd make sure you are using quality rubber (the only contact the car has with the road)

ecu: depending where you live i'd source a recomended tunner. then ask what they use. it is more imortant to find a good tuner than a perticular ecu. haltec/microtec/unichip are all basicly the same.

then i'd look at an lsd.

depending on your budget i'd then look into brakes, larger intercooler? how big is an sp one? exhaust and on and on but i think that should get you started.

Big enough. I've not heard of anyone replacing it with a bigger unit.

A thousand apologies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was just a suggestion.

Just thought the SP Motorsport cold air box would be more effective as it draws air from the front grill. Kind of a ram effect, i suppose.

But then i'm no engineer.

Had to get the message through some how - a few (repeat) suggestions here about SP modifications show a lack of knowledge about the SP and the great bit of kit that comes standard.

Heaven forbid they have confused the mighty SP for an SE, where I agree that exhaust and airbox mods are mandatory.

They're good, but you have to admit things can be done to make sure the airbox sucks in colder air and you can also get benefits of upgrading to a more free flowing 3\" exhaust system once you've installed a better turbo.

Not here to rain on your parade, just offering a few suggestions on how to improve your float.

I understand where you are coming from Okibi, but what are the limits of the standard turbo? Around 200kw...? More? So why replace it with a bigger one?

Doesn't have to be bigger, but a better designed turbo will create less lag.

Yep - minimal lag with an SP

The day that WRC cars find it necessary to stick on huge drain pipe exhausts I'll think about doing likewise. In the meantime the SP doesn't need it and the std gear (airbox, exhaust, intercooler, injectors) is good for at least 180kW ATW.

We know this because it has been done.
