Electrical short in the fuel tank - Oops!

Yeah, I thought that too. Is heatshrink fuel proof? I would be sceptical to say the least.

But then again, I was surprised when I learned that electric fuel pumps are actually inside the tank. Then I figured some smart ass engineer figured it is ok. Coming from an electrical background I was surprised. Just didn't sound right to me. Having now accepted that this is how it is I'm quite happy that cars don't go KA_BOOM all the time.

You need fuel, a spark and oxygen to start a fire. There's not enough oxygen inside a fuel tank to allow it to happen.

That's what I was thinking but figured someone would say that there is an amount of oxygen each time the fuel cap is opened.

Fuel rated heatshrink (& wiring & connectors) is available.

Modern cars have a non-vented fuel cap and tank, a flap on the filler neck and some sort of fuel vapour capture/release system, typically based on a charcoal canister. Together these form a system designed to maintain O2 levels in the tank below dangerous levels.

... which is all fine as long as you don't worry too much about TWA800.

Another reason not to leave the car running when refueling!
