Hi guys,

I'm hoping the builders amongst you will be able to help me out here. With my engine rebuild looming (still waiting on pistons...), I'm looking for a bunch of 'extra' bits and pieces. Can anyone help with the items from the following list? I'm thinking some of the racers here might be able to help. I'm after:
  • Welch plugs
  • Bearings for crank and pistons
  • Valve stem seals
  • Valves
  • Hydraulic valve lifters
  • Oil pump
  • Sump
  • 99 head
  • Engine mounts

Mazda want $330ish for an oil pump, so I'm hesitant to use them. I haven't yet called about the other pl

Try these guys. Streets Auto Spares 3351 1855 at Arana Hills. I have bought heaps of stuff of them for about the last 20 years. The same people have been running the place since it began. Prices are usually good and they are very knowledgeable.

Alternatively I have also used Supercheap (don't laugh) as they can get all the brand name parts as well if you ask, but they have no idea about technical stuff just part numbers. Just make sure when getting quotes from them its for all the items you want. Because if they quote individually they add extra freight to each item.

Let us know how you go.

Andrew. :)

Thanks.

Russellb: wow, pricey. I've seen that the alternative is to source the lifters from Kia, as the Sephia (94-97 I think?) used the Mazda BP, and therefore the same lifters. I'm going to go see them on the weekend and get them to price them for me.

If that's them, I might go over and see them on the weekend. I'm in Alderley, so that's easy enough. :)

Have you tried MX5 Plus? They are in QLD too.....they have helped me heaps, even though I'm in WA ;)

MX-5 Plus are great - I've been there a few times. But unfortunately I need new parts and they just do second hand stuff. Good generally, but not for engine internals. :)

For the head and sump though - they're my first port of call.

Compared to a FJ20 oil pump for $1800, $330 isn't too bad lol

Sabre, some tricks for you:

HLAs - you can purchase aftermarket ones for around $25 each. They are definitely worth buying new. Try asking an engine reconditioning shop around your area. (I think I have a full set of solids brand new somewhere, must find them!)

Gaskets: You can also buy an aftermarket non-ACL gasket kit for a couple a hunge less than an ACL but I would buy the ACL or purchase the head and intake/exhaust gaskets seperately and cut the rest yourself.

Oil Pump: that's definitely the thing you want to buy new from mazda

Sump: Try Mania, they had one last time I was there (which was a little while ago)

Engine Bearings: Purchase ACL Race series mains and rod bearings. They are better at oiling than OEM ones.

Welsh Plugs: new ones are cheap as chips just not from Mazda.

Remember the Laser/323/Astinas/GTX and Sportages all used variants of BP motors so shop around.

Engine Mounts - Corksport in the US do the mazdaspeed HD ones cheaper than anyone. No cups though...

99 Head = rocking horse poo = good frickin luck! (You'll also need an intake manifold remember!)

That's about all I've got for you. 8)

Thanks lads.

Oil pump - will more than likely be purchasing one from Mazda. Probably THE most critical part of the engine, so I'm not going to risk it. Ditto for the pickup.
Gaskets - I'm mostly set with these. I still have one of the two that I bought from CTZoom. I still need two valve stem seals.
Sump - I'm going to try MX-5 Plus - they had more than a few bits lying around.
HLAs - can be replaced any time with little effort (I'm not at all shy about removing the timing belt). I'll go second hand for now and see if I can rebuild the suckers. They're not at all critical so if they make noise then I'll replace them. They're easy to test to see how good they are, though.
Welsh plugs - who stocks these? I assume it's a standard engine rebuild place type part?
Bearings - I'll be trying Performance Wholesale to start with.
Engine mounts - I'm definitely going Corksport for these. I was also considering the Magnecors from Corksport too.
99 head - I managed to find a VVT head but decided against it. I'm not chasing serious HP (yet? :)) so I'm just sticking with the 94. I'll get that tanked and machined without worrying about a P&P.

Adam: A 3S-GTE oil pump is about half the price of a BP pump, I believe. And speaking of rocking horse poo - try finding a brand new NA6 short nose crank pump!
