maybe turbo kit & rig a stock extractor heatshield to be a cover so when she looks under the bonnet she'll still be wondering \"why the heck is this thing so fast?!?\"

AVO do an excellent kit. Great quality, reliable, by exxy - which by the looks of it doesn't bother you. With that sort of money you can do a very nice kit up.
I remember reading an article on an AVO Stage II kit fitted to a 10AE, and it went like stink. They were very proud cause it was better than an SP

. I tried 'google'ing it, but couldn't find it. Have a look into it though, a lot of guys on this forum swear by AVO.

Stage 1 AVO kit looks almost factory (more than the SP kit does!) and when we did a dyno day yonks ago at SP Motorsports, did very similar power to the SP's too.

What Craig said. It looked like Mazda designed it to be there.

You are right in that I'd probably consider suspension and possibly braking mods first. Get a good set of coilovers installed, a Torsen LSD, maybe replace your brake rotors if need be.
I'd also recommend advance driver training somewhere in there (heard good stuff about the Ian Luff training days).
And then use whatever's left over to go faster

jonno.

Looks like there are a few votes for AVO... I'm going to jump on the Coilovers and TorSen LSD bandwagon too though (although, that might be something you have already decided to do that is outside of your budget).

when i first starting thinking about getting a turbo i went and visited the avo factory to get a quote. i can't remember if i was quoted on the stage 1 or 2 kit, but it was just under $8k, fully fitted and dyno tuned etc. they are in melbourne but have interstate agents.

Mazda didn't put anything else in the SP. Some people do forget that the MX5 is actually astonishingly good straight out of the factory handling wise. We just get so excited because little things can make it even better. I wouldn't bother about brakes, clutch or radiator if you are only looking at 120-130kW atw... The SP/SE have NB8B brakes, and the SP has the same clutch (not sure about radiator for either, but i can't see them being different...).
So I'd start with LSD to get your new power to the ground, and a Stage I AVO or equivalent (which would have some sort of piggy back or ecu with them). Then suspension should be top of the list of things to do later down the track.
Why wouldn't you consider bying an SP? It is a 2002 model NB8B... (Great call BTW Matty!

)

The SP has a bigger radiator. The rest of the suspension/brakes/drive line is standard NB8B MX5. But yeah, for the extra money you want to spend on your car now you could have bought an SE and had it all done for you at the factory.

What have you learned from this PaoPee?? Obviously not much, because here you are asking forumites again!!
New rotors aren't going to set you back much, and if you aren't planning to track the car much, slotted isn't that important.
Thanks for the heads up on the radiator Garry, any idea if the SE is the same?
And keep trying mania, they will be able to give you good advice.

Mania are closed on Thursdays - so you won't get them till tomorrow. Why not go a totally different way - keep the road car stock and buy a track dog with the $. Mania have a race car for sale at present inside your budget - keep it registerable (just) and enjoy the occasional weekend drive and track days, and enjoy driving your black one the rest of the time. I have always found that unless your pockets are as deep as BJs

then you'll end up with a compromised daily driver that is neither perfect on the road or the track, and along the way you will get frustrated and wonder why you started down that path... just my 2c and experience.

PaoPee wrote:is a bad thing to get power and no ecu?
Yes. The OEM ECU would not be able to manage the engine with a turbo fitted.

I'm impressed JBT! Just a few months ago at a dodgy day I heard you saying "so why should I play around with my ECU thing?"
