Guys and gals,

One of the two hoses which go from the rear of the engine through the firewall (I'm assuming they're for the heater) has developed a nasty drip on the engine side.

Does anyone have a part number for these?

My intent it to remove it this evening, cut a bit off it, re-clamp and get to a Repco / Mazda joint and grab a new one. Any problems with this plan?

BTW - it's a '97 NA 1.8.

EDIT _ is a better plan to remove both in and out hoses, and connect the in and out ports on the engine together, using one hose, bypassing the heater?

Make sure you carefully cut the hose off the very fragile pipe at the firewall.

Beware that the heater is an integral part of the cooling system.

If you have had a heater hose let go, best to check the back of the head around the CAS for oil leaks if you haven't done so already. The oil slowly kills the hoses, so I would be wary of driving too far or too long with the old hose in place. I ended up buying a meter of generic heater hose and bypassing the heater core until I could replace the hoses. Although how mazda can justify around $50 for 2 pieces of rubber I will never know. It also took 2 days to get them shipped up to Brisbane. YMMV, I elected to replace all the other 13 year old hoses at the same time.

not the heater per se, but the routing of the cooling around the back of the head relies on having that flow path open. At a minimum you need to route the hoses to each other.

I was also told it was required for coolant volume.

I'd get both hoses. It can be a bitch of a job and you'll probably end up cutting off the hoses with a Stanley knife.

Do check the CAS area for leaks while you're at it. With mine, I smeared a tad of grease on the replacement hoses where they attach to the heater core fittings.

I got mine genuine from Mazda.

Thanks JUles. Actually popped it up to Mania this morning, as I couldn't find 1/2 the tools I needed to do the job .

Daniel sorted it for me, took him about 35mins - would have taken me two hours! It was from a leaky CAS o-ring, that we replaced earlier this year, so at least I know. Total all up was sub $50 for the replacement hose and labour - MX5Mania truely rock!

Picked up a vodoo knob and Benny's boot to celebrate 171,000 k's, as well!
