If the car is a Jap. import it would be the plug that goes to the CAT....Aussie cars don't have this.

Thats my guess too.
On the JDM models only, temp sensor at the rear of the cat, that when too hot shows on one of the lights in the instrument cluster and is there to indicate cat failure and replacement time. Is explained in Japanese on the drivers visor. Mine has been disconnected like yours for some time with no adverse effects, other than an error beep on shutdown.

my cars jdm aswell.
had the same problem when i bought my car
i just made up a bracket to fit over the hole it leave in the cat and removed the wires
made no difference to the power / handeling / or anything about the car
