SE Potential?

Ok, so i am sitting here plotting out what i will do to my Black/Titanium SE that i WILL purchase someday down the track.

Basically i have several goals in mind, and am wanting your comments on whether these are realistic for a reasonably streetable car.

1: I want to run up to 20 PSI with one of those dual stage boost controllers that will let me run a cool and calm 12PSI on the street.

2: I want a low 13, possibly high 12 second pass on the quarter mile

3: I want it to be reliable, and strong, but still \"just a nice car\"

Now the questions:

What sort of power figure would i need in an MX5 under the above criteria?

How much boost can the stock SE motor hack?

Will the drivetrain crap itself? Note that this will not be a car that will be thrashed, the intention is to use it as a weekend toy/occasional track car.

I assume i will need the usual ECU, fuel pump, injectors, turbo, exhaust and intake mods, but will i need a rebuild? Sabre's writeup has me inspired on the rebuild idea, but i dont want to throw my monopoly money away so frivilously.

Am i being too unrealistic of my expectations?

Forged pistons, beefy rods, ARP studs throughout, GT2871R, MoTeC, huge ass fuel injectors and change of underwear.

EDIT: and of course a nice alloy radiator from PWR. 8)

I'm guessing you might get 240 rwkw @ 20PSI

Probably about 14psi but dont quote me on that

Will the drivetrain crap itself?
Clutch will, rest might too.

swirl pot, radiator, intercooler, oil cooler, power steering cooler?, then tick all the boxes on a Flyin Miata crate engine.

Depends on your budget

SirBob,

One of our former forumites (Fastdriver) had a black SP running with a UniChip, water injection and about 12 lbs of boost. He was seeing about 185rwkw (no idea what dyno) and I watched him do a 13.0 neat at WSID one warmish summer evening. He was a prettty experienced operator at the dragstrip, and reduced his times by one tenth on each successive run as the eveining cooled...
Everything else on the car was basically stock - so your goals aren't out of the question. His partner bought an SE at the same time he sold his SP, and he was talking of giving it some extra mumbo when I last spoke to him. You could try sending him a PM for some ideas perhaps?

Cheers,
Dave

You're a cheeky bugger SPy...

To my undertanding the lower compression ratio of the stock SE should mean greater potential for higher boost relative to the SP's. Again, i know boost isnt everything, but a low 13 is probably a more realistic option of where i would like to be, which is what you people seem to say is quite reasonable...

I guess it all comes down to the two universal standards, time and money, and how much of both you have available to spend...

It's still in the pipedream though... One of the few things that keeps me sane...

Yeah it does seem to have a little more poke than Marks SP, and I was extremely grateful and privileged to drive both back to back.

I believe fastdrivers car to be another WMD but IIRC that beast went elsewhere.

160-170rwkw with the right tyres will get you low 13's high 12's in an SE.

A NA8 (torsen) with 160rwkw and worn 195 series yokie street tyres is good for a 12.9 8)

Forget about the internals, they are strong enough (especially SE). Will need Turbo, 'Cooler, Radiator, Exhaust, ecu etc..
