When the engine is cold... eg off in garage over night. The fans will/should not come on when you start the car. The fans should turn on when the engine reaches operating temperature. Therefore when turning the car off after a drive and returning it to it 5mins later the fans will turn on straight away (because the car is still warm).

The a/c fan will only even turn on when the a/c is on.

The a/c fan is on the drivers side.

If the fan is coming on before the engine is warm it may be a good idea to inspect the wiring, it may have been rewired to turn on straight away. The noise may also be a busted fan. Dissconnect the plug to the fan and see if the noise is still there.

This wiring diagram may come in handy....

Unplug the thermoswitch and check for continuity between the two pins. There should only be continuity when the engine is hot. Sounds like your thermoswitch is stuffed to me.

I would put a multimeter on the thermofan switch on the front of the engine and check if there is a closed circuit when it is cold. If this is the case then it is probably faulty.
You can pay over $100 for a new one, depending on the brand, but you should be able to pickup a alright looking one from a laser or 323 at the wreckers cheap.

You can just test it without pulling it out. With the car cold unplug it and put a multimeter across the two pins testing for resistance, if you get a reading then there is a closed circuit and it is not working properly.
