I'm in the process of looking for a 1.8 diff upgrade for my 91 mx5, I've found a low km 2002 diff with torsen but I don't know the ratio, should I be lloking for an earlier diff?

It'll be a 3.636 ratio in a 2002 6 speeder. Your ratio in the 91 is a 4.3 so your best off chasing a 4.1 out of a NA Clubman or an imported NB 98-2000 5 speed.

The LSD centres can be pulled and replaced in all the 1.8 diffs, not sure about the SE though as it's got a different centre, as the one I had was a hell of a lot beefier than the Torsens were.

The SE LSD is a Bosch unit, very tough bit of gear, but totally incompatible with the "normal" MX5 diffs, you'd need the entire carrier and shafting set-up from an SE to do the conversion, you can probably liken it to a 1.6 to 1.8 type of conversion.
