My crank pulley has two marks/indents/groove/etc on it. I have been using the left hand mark as my timing mark but
I want to find out once and for all which indent/groove it should be...the left one or the right one??
In the image below (viewed from the front), the long white mark is the left one, the extreme right white mark is the right indent/groove and the middle one is a f%$k up

left or right?

Take out the spark plug in No 1 cylinder and insert the cleaned oil dipstick down through the spark plug hole. Then turn the engine over with the ignition off using the big bolt on the crankshaft and check for top dead centre. Thats the mark you should use. If no marks line up then you have the dreaded short nose crank problem.

Thanks Gary,
That is an elegant solution..though bear in mind my previous posts regarding the dreaded \"small dipstick\" problem
As for the short nose crank, I may have a short dipstick but the NA8 has a nice sexy loooong nose

Seriously, Ta for the advice.
