How the hell did you break it THERE?

Don't know Babaloui, it was like that when I bought the car. (see $3900 mx5 in for sale section) Th r/h stub axle has a huge amount of wear on the end of the spline, and the inside of the diff where the stub fits is oval !! Must have made some horrible noises. Can't see how this would account for the break though.

I've seen a couple that have broken there from accidents. You can get it welded back together if the rest of the diff is ok.

It's suposed to snap off in the event of a collision at the rear as a safety feature. But I thought it was supposed to break a bit further along the arms, not right at the diff housing like that one.

as gary said, in the event of a rear end accident it snaps. as your car was bought from the auctions damaged in the rear end this is the most likely result.
I have seen one break that far up on the diff housing before. I through the housing out and just got a new one.

it is common for 1.6 diffs to break......but not where this is brocken.
the diff has a weak point so it snaps in heavie rear end collisions.....just like garry said......kind of a safety feature
this is a more common place for it to snap. something snapped internally & brocke the casing from the inside

you should be able to pick another one for around $500......or even cheaper.

The SR20DET powered MX5 in teh states broke in teh exact same place - No accident, apparently due to old age and excessive power...
