Hard starting

Hey guys,

My 2000 6sp is needing more cranks to fire up lately. I have done searches and found the main culprits as suggested to be plugs, leads or fuel pump, or battery. My car has done 100k by the way.

Once fired up, the car behaves normally, revs well and no signs of any problems. The plugs are new so I can rule that out. As for the rest, are there symptoms that will point in the direction of one or the other?

My gut feeling is the pump as the rest are electrical and being electrical, they will caused hesitation, etc when car is being drĂven, right?

Whatdoyathink? thanks!

Have you done the 100k service on it yet? They'll definitely change the fuel filter, and I'm fairly sure the leads/plugs are done to? Might help remove the problem, not to mention get the car running a little better.

In my case where the car has always been in reasonable well tuned state......Its always been the battery when the cranking struggles.

Thanks guys,

I'd like to think that it's not the fuel pump! The car does go well and I would expect hesitation and probably stumbling at idle if the pump plays up. Those of you who had to replace the pump, what klms had the car done when it happened?

Should I get the battery tested to be sure? I think the battery is the original one, so I guess it had a good run. The 100k \"service\" was basically the timing belt and oil change. The plugs replaced but not the leads. I would have thought the leads will cause rough running, not just hard to start.....

Anyone replaced the leads on the VVT engine before? What would be the approx cost I wonder?

Lots of questions I know, but hopefully relevant and would be useful to others too!! :P

Cheers

leads are $75 from mania for the NB8B and are a cinch to do. Stick with the OEM leads though - lots of reports on other brands not sealing to the head properly or falling to bits prematurely. OEM ones last well and work fine. Easy preventative maintenance in my book, and change the plugs while you're there too.

Oh-oh......just ordered a set of Magnacor ones thinking it's bigger, thicker, better and cheaper, etc, etc!!!!

Anyone had bad experiences with these??

Plenty of people. The problem is that some of them are a very tight fit, and fall apart. Mine are a very tight fit.

In that case, should MXMania be told of this?? No point of them selling bits that falls apart!!! End up being expensive..... :?

See if I can ring them tomorrow.

Apparently the Magnecors for the NB8B have been redesigned to fit better. But I still prefer the OEM ones

Me too! Bought the Magnacors and ended up turfing them for the OEM's

Mania have also commented that NB8B batteries are a weakpoint...not as good or as long lasting as the NA ones apparently!

I had a set of the old Macnecors and they plugged on OK, but they weren't a natural fit. When I removed them, the ends snapped off and stayed on the spark plugs.

I swapped out a set and the new ones seem really good. They are totally redisigned and give that OEM \"click\" when you put them in.

BTW, they were replaced for free under Macnecor's 10 year guarentee. 8)

Sounds like a battery problem (in conjunction with this cold weather). Check the simple stuff first !
