Pod filter test on an NB, by Hot4s

I always like to read on the way home on the train so I picked up an issue of Hot4s Magazin that had a special liftout, Technical Handbook
anyway, reading though it there was a pod filter test done on an NB (looks like an NB8B, headlights)

Results
stock: 76.5rwkW
Snorkel removed(airbox still used): 80rwkW
Snorkel and filter removed(airbox still used): still 80rwkW
Everything replaced with a pod filter: 84.4rwkW
with bonnet down, no dyno fan and warmed up with exposed filter: 83.4rwkW

only the airbox was removed and replaced directly by a pod filter juat after the airflow meter with the rest of the intake piping left stock. So according to the tests they did you can gain ~8rwkW from putting in a pod filter :shock: , and only lost 1rwkW from having an exposed pod filter, I always thought that the improvement was negligible from putting in a pod filter, evidently not

anyone out there tried this and checked the results on a dyno??

That sounds pretty far fetched for something as simple as that.

I've just gotten a CAI put on, and will probably take the car to the mania dyno day in a week's time, so I guess I'll see what the figures are and we'll see at least how it all stacks up on my car (although I don't know what the stock figures were).

they did have the dyno curves shown, all plotted on the same graph, I though it looked a bit high, i'll try and get some pics up later so you can all read it for yourselves

NB8Bs do low 80s stock in shootout mode.........must not have tightened the straps in the first run....

hehehe

maybe the HUGE 80kw was frying the tyres on the dyno :D then they strapped it ;)

but in all reality, i took my pod off as i found driving longer distances would take power away as the pod was sucking air from around the exhaust manifold. once i put the std air box back on the power was right in the middle of the difference between the pod on a cold day (or short trips) & the pod on a hot day (or long trips) so the std air box cant be doing too bad a job & once modified would be a great thing....

as for the 8kw or what ever it was that was gained..... wonder if they took some of the load off the dyno :roll:

On my SE I took the snorkel off, and it made no difference (in that article apparently it was supposed to help). I've replaced the airbox with a pod, and it doesnt feel any different to how it felt before, however the noise made was nicer. If i have it back by mania's dyno day, we can see if its made any difference

Sorry, but that article is full of it. You can't get a 8rwkw gain from a pod. Especially when it would sit directly over the headers in it's stock position.

sorry thats just way to hard to believe.

maybe 1-1.5rwkw..... it barley make a noticeable difference.

The thing I found with Pod filters is the seem to add torque.....more so than HP. or maybe thats just my driving.

no way 8kw
i recently got a mania enlarged pipe with pod and heat shielding.
id say it gave a few kw's in cold weather.
but in warmer weather...no difference.

but its worth it for the glorious sound it makes.

This is interesting, I just spent some time with the GM on the dyno , and amongst other things we tried some variations of intake config. The GM has a NB model Loch Stewart cowl intake.

We tried this config, no cowl/afm (ie just the crossover trunking), and nothing on the TB.

There was not a lot in it, but the cowl induction (with dirty air cleaner) had a good couple of Kw over the crossover only, which in turn was a bit better than sucking directly from the TB with no trunking at all. All runs were with the dyno fan on and bonnet closed, and under bonnet temps monitored.

This is of course top end power, I haven't got the dyno sheets to compare low and mid range, and I would expect responsiveness to be improved as intake trunking is removed.
