The wheels are supported by the wheel nuts.
The rings are used ONLY to locate the wheel on the hub till the nuts are tightened....It allows for morons to tighten wheel nuts either clockwise or anticlockwise yet still have the wheel centred.
The RX7 wheels I use on the track are a tight fit on the rear hubs of my NC, they are a loose fit on the front....they are not branded F/R to suit the different hub diameters nor are the std wheels which are a loose fit.

Sailor et al.

In this case Dann is totally correct. It is about to become a legal requirement, asuuming that the states finally agree on the latest draft of VSB14. The following is extracted from from •NCOP11 Section LS Suspension and Steering V2 01Jan2011. For reference, the document can be found here

4.2.2 Wheel Attachment

Replacement aluminium alloy rims must be located on the hub/axle by the same diameter
centre spigot as the original wheel, using suitable adaptor rings where necessary.

This seems pretty clear to me. Let the war of words begin.

205 tires would be fine on 8 inch wheels. 205 / 25.4 = 8.07 inch. tire width is still slightly more than rim width. have read more then one suspension book which says ideally rim width is slightly more than tire width.

Incidentally, plenty of people run 205 tires on the 6ul and the fitment looks spot on.

Sounds like if hub rings are going to be law easier to buy them now with your wheels then later.

Thanks...when/if it becomes a requirement, it'll be yet another indication that GovCo is run by morons.
Morons however who recognise that not installing a wheel by correctly tightening wheel nuts can cause problems.
Morons who recognise that most tyre fitters could take their jobs.

BTW a can of worms has been opened.
Quickly reading the tyre/wheel size substitution guidelines it appears that a car could be legally registered with very wide wheels, still conform with the road rules YET be wearing rims too wide for CAMS to accept in road registered classes.

Nothing new here, look at what they wanted to impose on ride heights and suspension modifications last year before the local suspension industry banged down the Road Minister's door and demanded a rethink.

Here's an excerpt from Good-Win Racing’s site:

Most modern aftermarket rims are made with an oversize center bore and the centering ring brings that bore size down to the Mazda fitment of 67.1 mm. These help to properly fit your new Mazda wheels. Price is for set of FOUR rings. Brian's application notes: Folks ask us all the time if hubcentric rings are required. They are NOT. They are a convenience item for centering the wheels properly, the lugs do the final centering. They are not a load bearing item which is why they can, and usually are, made of nylon reinforced plastic. Racers often skip these and use their knees to center the rims while they get the lugs on, street users usually get the rings.

So here you have a retailer selling a product and saying that it’s not required and if you buy it you’re not gaining any benefit.

The load transferred through to the axles is via the clamping effect the wheel nuts induce when the wheel is torqued down onto the hub assembly. Remember that your wheel nuts have a tapered shoulder that centre the wheel on the wheel studs.

I'm in total agreement with Sailor, there can be a lot of misinformation on Forums. Beware.

We need a smilie for flogging a dead horse.

Id hazard to guess that the friction against the hub faces holds the wheel on more than the studs do when theres no hubcentric rings.
