For the information of anyone else who experiences this, the alignment solved all issues. The car is now back to it's light and nimble best.
Regarding tyre pressures, the advice I was given by the aligner was to experiment. But that 26 was probably too low. Which is solid advice, it's about what feels best for you, really.

I'm running 32 psi in my 195 50 15's and my mate who is a tyre fitter says that's way too low.

IMO, 32-30 front-rear is a good starting point for most tyres on the road. On the track, you generally might consider running a little less depending on the shoes.
