Wheel locking clunk
The MX-5 is not FWD and does not have front CV joints. Maybe your steering rack is loose/broken or you have a ball joint loose/broken or some other serious issue with the steering.

Wheel locking clunk
The wheels might not be rubbing against the body work, but could be touching either suspension components or "chassis rail" if larger than standard wheels are fitted.
Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever.

Wheel locking clunk
My car used to make a horrible squeak on full lock. It turned out that the stone shield around the brake rotor had bent somehow and was rubbing on the lower control arm on full lock.

I can answer this one easily.
Wheel Bearing.
Hellmun had the same problem a couple of weeks ago at Wakefield.
Luckily Russell was there with a spare to whip off the old one and put on the newie.
