little tip. Use a layer of clear uv resistant isothelic gelcoat in the mould before you lay the carbon in. Firstly, It will have a sticky surface because it is unwaxed, which makes it easier to keep the carbon in place while you put the resin on. Secondly, It also gives the carbon protection against degeneration caused by exsposure to uv light. Thirdly , it gives a layer to wet and dry and buff without hitting the carbon. and the fourth reason is it makes sure you have a nice coverage of resin on the outside surface of your product, i.e no pin holeing.
How do I know this stuff?. I've been working with carbon since 1979.

I used epoxy as a gelcoat, But i will go and buy some and give it a go. It came out good everywhere except the edges as it ran away from being to viscous from the heat. I just washed the p.v.a membrane off, so it still had some water droplets on it in the photo's.

Keen to see the finished product too
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Looks great Dave,
Any thoughts on how you could make it compatible with the standard hardtop mounts?
No sure if I am prepared to go to the race car mounting method on my 5.

To make it compatible i would have to take a mould of all the internal sections. Make them individually and bond them all together, just like the factory one. I am happy to bolt it on as it doesn't need to come of all that often. And when it does it will only take a couple of minutes.

I cut the bottom of the bumper to let more air in. And panelled in the sides.

The hardtop has 2 more laminations and is now bolted to the car, just waiting on the rear window.

M8, that looks awesome, what did it weight in the end? I was looking at your posts about this today and wondered where you were with it

I will weigh it when the window goes in. Before i put it on i held it on the tip of my little finger very easily. Must weigh only a couple of kilo's.

I went to phillip island today for the hillclimb. The hardtop stayed on at over 200 km/h. So that was good. I also was the fastest car there up till round 6 i ended up being 3rd fastest out of over 70 cars. Not including the three formula libre. Would have been better with a back window.

I accidentally just bought a complete 1.8 t25/28 turbo setup. Now i will have to build my spare 1.8 motor so i have something to put it on.
