Greased up the outer black ring because of a harsh scrape that the steering wheel/boss kit gave off when turning.

Image

Image

Worked for about.. 10 minutes, till the grease separated, and the scrape came back, but a little quieter.
Anyone have any ideas of what the scraping sound could be? It's pretty much a hard plastic on plastic scrape, expecting some wear, but as i took off the boss kit, found that the outer black ring on the second photo (don't know what it's called) wasn't even worn out, but a bit of wear on the boss kit itself.

I'm assuming that if i replace the boss kit, the same issue will occur, right..?

Also, what's the little button for, on the second photo, to the left? Maybe for an added option?

Some updates to add from a few months ago. Some small jobs to keep me going and make me feel as though I'm actually doing something useful..

Super easy maintenance that anyone can do.

Used Turtle trim restorer on the soft top, really looks great and seems to protect it. Bottom is untouched, top has been restored. Huge difference!

Image

Cleaned power window contact switches and rocker switches on work surface.
http://www.miata.net/garage/CleaningSwitch.html

Image

Got rid of the bluetooth system & microphone to clean up the look. (old photo of when i bought her, car isn't this dirty anymore thank goodness). Doing this was the first "real" hands on thing that I've had to figure out on my own. It's really given me some confidence that's leading me to do more things because the feeling of accomplishing a task is really what it's all about!

Image

Image

Annoying glue mark wont come off, even with wax and grease remover and heaps of scrubbing too. Bum.
Image

Washed out washer reservoir. Once bolts are out, and cables/wiper motor have been unlatched from washer bottle, bottle needs to be twisted i think counterclockwise? for it to come straight out.
Image

So much gunk. Took about three runs for all gunk to clear.
Image

Trim restored the black headlight plastic shields

Today i decided to take a look behind the front fender guards..

Found on miata.net

Image

This was behind the drivers side. Pretty standard...
Image

This was behind the passengers.. Used this toothbrush to try my best, as well as a metal piece of wire.

Image

Gotta really look deep in there

Found this little guy within all the rubble

Plans soon consist of finally replacing the PCV valve & rubber grommet, fixing the major gutter rash on wheels from previous owners (bogging, sanding, spray painting), painting the rocker cover wrinkle black  and fixing the rear bumper damage from previous owner's garage door.

Finishing off the post with a lonesome photo of her at a Repco carpark. She looks like a toy next to those giant wrecks :D

Warning: Post contains blood!

So while in the area of Ringwood, i decided to pop into the MX5 Factory just to see if by any chance they would have a PCV valve and a grommet, if not otherwise would go to the closest Mazda dealer. So spoke to Dick Richey and said i was the first to ask for one at the factory.. Unfortunately they didn't have one, but he quickly rang his buddy that worked at a Mazda dealer if they had any in stock, he said he did a search and were none in stock at all. So he ordered one for me, which arrived the very next day. Getting home to take out the PCV valve was a breeze, but the grommet, not so much.

My guess was that the grommet hadn't been changed for a long long time, and it had hardened basically to the point of being impossible to pull out. Probably spent a good hour try to wriggle it out, using a flathead, which caused the edges to begin to rip, and still nothing. So i decided to take the valve cover off as a last resort and just push the grommet through to the back of the housing, and unscrewed the cover, and slipped it out that way.

The casing of which i pulled out the grommet

Reminder of the leak before
Image

Image

The two bolts behind the cover were on pretty tight, and while undoing them, slipped and scraped. Instant reaction "MUM! WHERE'S YOUR PHONE??!"
Image

I was having second thoughts about painting my valve cover due to perhaps not being able to clearly identify whether or not there would be any oil leaks in the future, but since the cover was off, i thought why not. This is where being a first timer, took its toll, and the problems began to roll. So advice to any new comers who might be reading this is, research the project completely before doing anything. I got too cocky and found this out the hard way. I degreased, sanded, and applied two coats before i found out that people who had reused their old valve cover gaskets had had some sort of leak. So i degreased the back with an old toothbrush and removed the old sealant. Having the cover on its back caused the paint to scratch, so when i finished cleaning it, did a couple more coats. I went and bought a brand new valve cover gasket from Bursons for about 30 something dollars and the silicone sealant for about $20.

Image

Image

Got home, removed old sealant from cylinder block, one solid piece fell, couldn't find it for about 2 hours, left it, felt disheartened, researched whether sealant in the cylinder block could damage anything, found nothing. Also, read that it's not a good idea to use a flathead to scrape the sealant off of the cylinder block as damaging the metal may cause leaks! Which was too late by the time i had done it.

As i gave up trying to find the bugger, i topped up the sealant in the 6 spots allocated found on miata.net, chucked the valve cover back on, couldn't for the life of me put the back two 12mm screws in, finally did it, put the first 10mm screw in hand tightened, torqued, put second bolt in, torqued, *pop sound* *silence* *gut wrenching feeling* (no pun intended) *oh no*. I SNAPPED A F*CKING BOLT. Take the two bolts out, including the back two bolts, rocker cover off, bolt was snapped with only about 2 threads popping out of the hole. Just enough for me to get some pliers and start twisting it out. Why didn't the first one snap? Anyway, turns out i torqued it to about 45 FOOT-pounds instead of INCH pounds. Facepalm. Learn from my mistakes, and i'll never confuse them ever again.

So i've left it all for tomorrow, where i'll buy a 1/4 torque and hopefully find some screws.

So basically today was just a day of things to go wrong!

On a lighter note, here are some pictures of the progress.

Image

Image

Pretty uneven job, but it'll do. Make sure to paint vertically with the cover as these streaks may appear due to uneven distance of spray.

Probably my fav photo

This little fella was watching (more like laughing at) me the whole day. Please stop shitting on the deck

I'm glad i can vent here. Cheers lads!

Going to leave the letters black or going to sand them back to metal?

Some good advice from Anth at Build-threads.com on wrinkle paint here:

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Everything's going wrong! The Works Engineering quick release came today, and turns out it doesn't fit the cheap crappy supercheap boss kit that came from the previous owner. Means i have to buy a slim boss kit and dish steering wheel then..
Cheers Dann for the quick pm replies!

It's okay, literally just figured it out. At first it seemed as though the hub that's on there now was too big length wise to fit, and bolt holes were not aligning, but for some strange reason/witchcraft, once i turned it a few times, i found the matching holes and magically aligned as though the hub and q.r were as one. Very confusing, rookie mistake number.. probably #77

Though now the steering wheel horn button wont sit in properly, and the horn cable wont fit due to its angle, so i've bent the little connecter for some leverage, but still a little stubborn, and doesn't want to sit flush with steering wheel. Maybe i'll put some of that gasket sealer i just bought..

Image

Image

Anyway, just need to go to a hardware store to buy some bolts for the valve cover as i rang mazda and said they'd need to order some in from Japan. JDM points don't seem worth the wait

Update.

It's been a while since i've updated my thread, but since then, i've bought:

Nardi Torino steering wheel from forum member Matsumotogarage
Yoko C-Drive 2 for the rear, which are super grippy!
Side Skirts from the group buy
Yellow Speed Coilovers

Gotten rid of these loose wires that were dangling from underneath the steering column, which turned out to be cables from an aftermarket security system, that weren't even plugged in, and dodgily wired up, and held up with cable ties.

It's all a slow process, but getting there. I'm pretty satisfied with how it is now.

This is before any of these things were done. I definitely don't miss that wheel gap.

Image

Nardi!!!

Image

Image

Image

Here's a picture of her with sideskirts in

Image

and here she is, before and after coilovers installed. Decided to start at midnight, finished around 4am, and more hours the next day adjusting height.

Image

Image

Image

Gosh they look great!!
Image

AFTER
Image

Image

Image

This is no adjustment, straight out of the box installation. The car doesn't sit as low as seen in these pictures anymore, as we adjusted with a sensible height, got it back after an alignment, found that they had settled and dropped quite a fair bit straight away, which was quite surprising.

edit:
Here are my alignment specs, for those who can read the mans handwriting at FTG Widetread.
Image

Anyway, happy with my results, and this might be my only update for a little while too as I'm really happy with it at the moment!

Cheers guys!
