Adrian's NA8 resurection

I'd like to share with you all what is now, and what is to come.
I am currently 18 years old Attending Unviersity and live at home in campbelltown area.
I used to own a red NA6, was my first car as a red P-plater (currently on green p's now), it wasnt perfect by any means but i loved it. This was her:

I didnt have many plans for it being such an old and worthless investment, but i managed to salvage a jap engine with low km's on it to swap for its tired and neglected engine. I got half way through changing all the seals, belts and gaskets on the new engine and sold it.

Why? :?:

Because i saw this:

A 1997 LE MX with less than 125,000 kms.

$4000 was a price that i couldnt refuse  ... even in the state it was in. It may not be evident in the photos but there was and is alot of work to be done to this car.

After fulfilling my ever indulgent thirst for uselessly having 2 mx5's on my parents front lawn, i decided it would be best if i sold one of them
The red car was sold as a slightly profitable investment for 4250 (i think slightly profitable due to the fluctuating market for mx5's).

Back to the green machine:
So for $4000 i knew there was going to be issues with the car. When we bought it i knew we were taking a gamble (we = me and my step dad bought it off his friend from work). The previous owner was a female, owned it for the last 7 years. The car got its scheduled mazda services all the way up to 99,000 kms, all good all good.

HOWEVER
After much inspection
We came to the conclusion that this car had barely been drĂven over the 7 years that she had owned it. DUN Dun dun...

The car was filfthy,
paint looked horrible (almost looked bluish brownish)
had no oil in the engine
the brake resovoir looked worse than an oil change after 15,000 kms (not really, just exaggeration lol)
the brake pads were down to nothing
rotors felt like they were warped
radiator had a small leak, as did the rear heater hose
overall very neglected little car
clutch was near gone

I had a brand spanking new TODA flywheel and exedy HD clutch combo sitting my gararge which was supposed to be used on my donor engine for the 1.6.
So as you may have already guessed, I decided to use it on the 1.8 as a combo to satisfy the clutch issue. (yes the 1.8 and 1.6 are interchangeable).

The radiator issue was also resolved shortly after picking up an ebay cheapy.

Cheap is cheap but this was definately value for money :D

I had a used set of Koni/king combos sitting in my garage that i was going to use on my red car, so they were installed almost straight away:

The stereo barely worked, being one with a particular ear for music and sound i had always wanted something ALOT better than all my friends shitty super cheap auto branded speakers and subwoofers in their cars.

I sound deadened the doors myself, not the most professional job out there but it definately works:

I then went and saw a professional audio specialist out near silverwater who directed me to the best speakers for my budget. I ordered a brand called Morrel's, model name Tempo 6, 6 inch splits. You may have heard of them, they truly are one of the most amazing sounding speakers i have ever heard.
If you havent heard of them you can compare them to brands such as focal and rockford fosgate.
I then combined this with a top of the line Kenwood KDC-X8016BT, 2 amps and a Kicker slimline sub for the boot.

The brake pads definately needed a change soon and the rotors were well and truly F***ed lol (don't ask me how but they were).
with some guidance i decided to get new rotors, multi directional slotted DBA to be exact 8) and mated EBC greenstuff pads to them. They currently suit my needs.

When we bought the car, the no oil part bothered me alot, made me wonder is there was any leaks... searched and searched nope. So i decided to flush the engine with a clean oil change for a few thousand kms and then change again. The car was running fine and didnt develop any leaks what so ever.

2 months later....

One morning i woke up to go somewhere, got in the car, started it, lots of smoke? :?: confusion. From that morning till this day it blows a sh*t load of smoke on cold startup for about 5 minutes, and about half a kilomter down the road then stops blowing smoke. I have been driving it every day since letting it warm up 10 minutes before i go anywhere everytime, filling the street with the sweet sensation of burning oil. im just waiting for it to die - strong little things these are!

For more info please refer to my thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=48652

Anyway i have finally had the time to organise an engine rebuild.
It will be getting rebuilt by Daniel Deckers,
from my understanding he usually builds high performance race engines,
but when i gave him a call he was more than happy to do this job for me.

basically we have discussed:

1mm overbore,
10.5 comp pistons (vs standard 9:1)
minor head work,
crank balancing,
new bearings, front and main seals etc.

It will be getting done towards the end of this month so i will be sure to keep you posted! Photos to come!

Other future plans:
Full bare metal respray in either standard BRG or Montego blue (because i really love that colour), the paint is really sh*t at the moment, plenty of bird poo stains, scratches, and a massive indented scratch on the left rear quarter panel :frown:

Here is the car as it stands today:

And a link to a video for anyone who wants to see how much smoke this sick little baby actually spits out on startup:

Thanks! more to come!

I have finally got a chance to get on here and update my thread.

Since my last post i said that the engine was getting rebuilt.
The engine is currently out and in the hands of daniel.
meanwhile my parents near new VW polo GTI gets to sit outside in the rain all night/day 8)

I ended up going with a 1.5mm overbore and 10.6:1 compression ratio. This will bring it up to around 1930cc's and should give it noticeablelly more torque.
I am also organising a headerback exhaust system system inc hi-flow cat which i am aiming to get custom installed as soon as the engine goes back in. Need to make a few phonecalls but at the moment my thoughts are:

X force headers from mania
Magnaflow 2.5inch hi-flow cat +
2.25inch Cat back stainless resonated exhaust with custom shop muffler.

OH AND I ALMOST FORGOT

installed a new brown davis rollbar aswell :) cant wait to get on the track!!
here are some photos:

Thanks Jeo  ,

quick update:

Engine goes back in monday or tuesday. Seeing as i am working from wednesday till friday i think the exhaust job is going to have to wait till after christmas or even the new year :(

Since the last post i have done some minor maintanence:

I have replaced the clutch slave cylinder
and changed the shifter boots, including the turret oil and plastic bush.

I should also be receiving my garage vary lip any day now so photos of that to come too :)

Engine went back in on Monday night, all was good except a noisy ticking lifter. Allthough they were pulled apart and cleaned out one of them must have been screwed.

Anyway, dropped the car back to Daniel today, the lifters will be getting inspected and changed. Other than that the car was pulling strong and smoothly at 9 degrees BTDC.

The car has plenty of power and extra torque compared to before, it feels great.

The timing will also be getting advanced to 12.

The car is now almost a 2L with just under 11:1 compression, i am very happy with it :)

Here are some recent photos of the front lip as promised:

UPDATE:

Engine is running like a dream, has a lot of poke, timing sitting somewhere between 10 and 12 BTDC, no pinging as of yet but im unsure of a very subtle vibrating noise coming from the front of the car when i rev past 6, have a feeling it could have been a loose number plate bolt but i am going to investigate further when i get the car back.

"get the car back he says" yeah i dont have it... why? ..

Car is currently getting a complete bare metal respray :D :D

Has been there for a good 2 weeks and should be expecting it back sometime at the end of this month.

Here are some photos of it in the workshop:

The car is getting redone in BRG only cause i want it to keep its Value and its limited edition ess....

Will update when i get the car back next and post photos or the job.

Take care all

The only thing i have in mind in a headerback exhaust, that is literally all it will be mising, im guessing it will give me a noticeable difference as i am running a bigger bore and higher compression, the intake side is fully opened up too.

This is also money that i have no more of so will take some time as im back at uni as of next month, so its gunna be hard to save working 3 days per week. But as is im pretty happy with it, at least for while :D

one day i would like to get cams/bucket shims/ecu/injectors etc etc

however i think for now i have spent enough money on my daily driver... lol. insurance is going to be a killer too, under 25 going full comprehensive with shannons as of march :frown:

Hi all,

Sorry about the late reply i have been flat out between work and organising uni.

Here's the latest update:

I received the car back from Hume Smash Repairs about a week ago.
Their work is seriously an art, Mick is extreemly Anal with his work, the attention to detail on my car can explain this.
For a reasonable price my car was baremetal preppeed and sprayed back to its original beauty in British Racing Green. Doors, bonnet, bootlid, windscreen, soft top and bumpers off.

HUME SMASH REPAIRS

Would just like to let everyone how much i highly reccomend Hume Smash Repairs for any type of body work - Insurance related or not. They will do the job exactly how it is supposed to be done. If perfection to a level equivalent or better than factory standards is what you want, these guys are for you.

Anyway, enough chit chat.. Here are some photos, enjoy.
(disclaimer: The photos are taken with my crappy iphone camera as i can no longer afford expensive camera's after this job)

Will take some nice photos on a view or something when i get the chance and post them..

The car is pretty much complete.
All it needs now is a headerback system and the leather skin on the drivers seat needs to be changed. Other than that its immaculate.

I joined the Mx5 club recently, even though i am young, am keen to get out there and join the mx5 community.

Take care all!
