Dougs BRG V-Special Roadster

Postby Doug Danger » Mon Apr 29, 2013 10:52 pm

Hi everyone, a couple of days ago I bought my 3rd MX5 !
911326_10151436861558568_908312240_n (800x597).jpg

It's a V-Special 1990 Eunos Roadster with a genuine GV front lip and aftermarket 14's unknown brand.

Initially it was a little hard going from Silvia back to the little 1.6, but after a few twisty's I started to get that giddy feeling I never got in anything but an MX5, and remembered why I love these cars so much.

Plans are to keep it basic and fun. I've done all the mucking round, chasing big power etc, over it.
-Get everything needed to pass RWC
-Bump up the timing to 14 TDC
-Rollbar
-Coilovers
-15' wheels and some sticky tires
-CAI
-Sparco sesat

I think the above will leave with me with a pretty neat unit. Ultimately, this car is intended to be a street car seeing the track every few months.

For those who are interested I'll give you a little history of me and my experiences with cars.
Growing up as a young kid, my dad and uncle both owned and tracked their MX5's. Tagging along to Winton and Wakefield as a boy and going as a passenger in the MX5 were some of the funnest experiences I had as a kid. I loved the smell, the sounds and the general atmosphere of the track.

Hit 18 and was given a car for my birthday, a Daihatsu Applause. Stupidly slow car but I had a ball of fun in it. Doing the dumb stuff you do to a first car, it had no rear seats, rear trim, spare tyre etc, straight pipe and a metal intake pipe. Blasted around in that for a year and pretty much destroyed it. Towards the end of its life the bleed nipple was destroyed on the right rear caliper, so it chewed through brake fluid. Literally drove it around topping it up every drive, and when they did go, I just yanked the handbrake and slowed to a stop with only the left calliper grabbing. Anyway, fun times...

Moved up to a 180SX CA18DET after that. Pretty quick compared to the Daihatsu, however it had a monstrous amount of problems with it. Coilpacks went, engine seized, blew the turbo etc etc, usual shizzle that happens when you can't afford it. So fixed it up, put a bigger turbo in, intercooler blahblah the usual Nissan stuff, spent thousands on it for the next owner and sold it. Apparently it's been reliable so there you go.

Went to a red NA6 after that. Got it cheap, was impatient and hadn't learnt my lesson from the 180SX... My first love affair with the MX5 was one that only lasted a few months as the engine spun a bearing and left me with a dead car. Was pretty shattered afterwards. The MX5 was the only car I drove that I ever felt properly connected to.

So I saved a bit harder, worked a bit longer and bought an NB8B.

Cracking car really. Not much wrong with it in my opinion. The only small gripe I had is that even with the coilovers in, exhaust etc, it just didn't have the same raw fun factor the NA6 did.

Then I drove my best mates relatively worked S14 200SX and impulsively decided I wanted one. So I swapped my NB8B for a real chill guy with a 1998 200SX in mint condition. Basically, I spent some cash on it and had it mildly worked, fuel pump, 3 inch turbo back *insert more nissan stuff* and it was an absolute gem of a car. Very fast and scared me when I put my foot down haha. Yeah I'm a bit of a pussy :P .
The police didn't like it, well me in it to be particular(p plates). Additionally, I had a string of bad luck financially and decided I couldn't justify keeping it.

So I did yet another swap (I like swapping, I find waiting for buyers and kissing their ass is too stressful for me). A real nice guy, super cool, automotive journalist, knew his stuff.
So now im back in an MX5! I forgot much fun you can have in this car! Very very happy to be back in another MX5 and cant wait to hit the track!

Thanks for reading :)!

Nope, another workshop haha. Needs a few things for RWC and figured may as well leave it there until everything is done.

Ok so not really much worth updating apart from the fact I'm still driving it relatively stock. Yes it's still a good little car however something always feels like it's missing. Power. Still tossing up on whether to start extensively modifying it or to just leave it as it is, drive it as a daily and buy an s13 sr20det and have fun with that on the track.
I'm currently leaning towards the latter.
Anyway, here are pics of some of the driving adventures I've been having with it lately.

Car looks good Doug ... Not surprising with the cars you've had that you're yearning for some extra power ....

Haha thanks guys ;).

Soo today I noticed the temp gauge running ultra high on the way to work and pulled over. Checked radiator and it was bone dry. Luckily I carry fluids with me so pored rad fluid until it was full (ish) and let the car idle once it was topped up. Sure enough there's rusted clamp and a cracked tiny hose spurting hot fluid everywhere. Cars in garage now and will have to wait until next week until I can replace it, when I plan on doing all the coolant hoses and clamps.

In other news, I've refreshed my interior. The tan crash pad was mismatched and faded so I've done a little spraying to the top door trims and crash pad.

Ok, so walked to car today to find some pussy pr*ck had slashed my roof. I live in a relatively trouble free area and my street is actually a court so I'm stumped as to who would've done it.

My cactus was also injured in the accident.

Nothing I can do really.ImageImage

Going to go hardtop now, when i can find one.

So, update time.

I had the possible short nose crank issue diagnosed and sorted by Zoran last month. Was at the very early stages and easily rectified. Loctite, new barrel and key and new timing belt has been fitted as well as a new radiator. I've also done a basic service doing oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and new belts all round. My crank wobble issue is sorted and the car is running great!!
Big thanks to Zoran (sprx3). Recommended by my mate, I found him super nice and helpful, bit of a smartarse but cracks me up none the less :P. With a pregnant wife at the time he made an effort to help me out when I asked and charged a quarter of the price another place quoted me on the same job. Highly recommend.

Also drove down to Sydney and picked up a hardtop last month too.

About to move out of home soon so the car will be left as it is until I can save more funds :). For the time being I'm just enjoying it!

Took it to the car wash and took some pics afterwards. Also put it up for an EOI on gumtree but it didn't generate much interest over 4-5 days. Doesn't really bother me, still loving it. Exhaust goes on tomorrow too :)ImageImageImage
