MattyRedlocks' MX-5: Moxxi the NB

Postby mattyredlocks » Mon Dec 15, 2014 10:39 pm

Ok everyone, I thought I'd finally get around to making a thread for the old girl - if nothing else but to keep track of everything that's been done to her.

I originally bought my 2002 NB8B MX-5 back in December 2013 (on the 16th, if you want to be precise), and have not looked back since. Coming from owning two boring (read: practical) cars, naturally I had to go for something more fun.

With 150k on the clock, (almost) immaculate paint and completely bone stock, it was exactly what I was looking for. The lady that owned it before me had taken excellent care of it. I was told the car was named "Jimmy" (check the number plate), but having just finished another playthrough of Borderlands, the car got renamed Moxxi before it even got home.

This is what she looked like a couple days after I picked her up:

Image

Here is where I learnt that no, you should not take an MX on a dirt road to your family Christmas do:

Image

After that, she received new number plates. Then, in true P Plater style, I put a hole in the bumper:

Image

Guess who now drives much more carefully in the rain? Turns out I got way to used to the traction control of my previous car. Just the front clip though, replaced with one that doesn't have the classic number plate screw dings.

Next came the new seats and a roll bar:

Here at the Automotive Plus/GT Auto Garage open day:

Image

So far I've taken her to four track days (and a handful of happy laps, but they don't count, do they?) Here's one from Lakeside, hard top fitted:

Image

Can't remember if that was going on or coming off - but yes, I did put a helmet on.

One last one, my favourite of the year:

Image

Plan for the next year is to keep her stock - aim is to learn how to drive at the track properly before doing anything else. Sights are set on winning the unmodified class in the club competition in 2015, but we'll see if that happens ;)

I understood that reference!

Looking forward to starting a little rivalry next year, now the Jaffa's got his new heart!

Devilishly fun little thing, and just a tad dangerous for your health? That about sums it up. Throwing "Mad" in front for the full title is reserved for when there's a supercharger or rotary under the bonnet, I think ;)

You're on! I'm super keen to hear what you think about the new flywheel and clutch on the track.

Got the car back from Automotive Plus yesterday - she's now got a new diff and working aircon.

Now rocking a Torsen 2 4.3:1 in the rear, far out it's amazing. Massive difference from the 3.6:1 open it used to have. All the gears are a little closer now, and it just feels better to drive. Dropping into 2nd gear when merging onto Gympie road put a massive grin on my face, that's for sure.

Aircon turned out to just be a re-gas, had to have it done after the recent weather we've had. Glad I did, because it doesn't look like it's going to get any cooler for a while too...

So apart from my last day at Morgan Park resulting in the overflow tank ...overflowing, my tyres becoming well and truly done, my front shocks also decided they'd had enough.

New tyres aren't on yet, but I did get the car back yesterday after having some work done:

Image

Yep, MCA Blue series. Haven't had the time to really take the car for a spin yet (and with the tyres having no shoulders, I'm not sure I want to take the chance of being pulled over), but I'm already loving it. Leaps and bounds above the stock, 160,000Km old suspension - and it's on the softest setting.
Because reasons.

Looking forward to the feedback on those. Just done brakes, so next thing to do is the roof, which is, well, rooted to the point of making the car unusable in the real world, but those are the step after that. How did you go getting them put in? How long did the job take, arranging, arriving at the initial set up, all that sort of stuff.

Took a half a day to actually get them in, but it took a few days to get the parts. Had Auto+ put them in for me. I'm sure they could order them in advance for you and do it in a day with a normal service. ...or you could just take it to MCA, they're up at Landsborough.

On the roof though, rip it out and get a hard top ;)

If you can get on a hoist it should only take about 2 hours for the basic settings. On car jacks I would allow 3.5 hours.
They have a base setting out of the box and ride very well for the stiffness of the springs. I had mine sent with 10/6kg springs as mine is mostly a road car. The preset are meant to be at ride height of 322mm from wheel centre to wheel arch. Mine is sitting at 329mm after a couple of hours driving so I may lower it 10mm in the next couple of weeks.

Hooray for new suspensions!

You'll have to wait till she gets new rubber, but for sure! I still want to take yours for a bit more of a spin too - you know, somewhere where I can actually put my foot down this time!

Maybe for track days, but for day to day running around (not that the little fella does that much now I have a work vehicle), no chance! If I'd wanted a coupe I'd have gone for an MR2.

Didn't realise you could get them installed places other than at MCA. Auto+ would be a bit more convenient, and I need to talk to them about induction and exhaust.

Yeah I said that too, then I drove around with the hard top and decided that I don't really miss the soft top at all. The hard top does still come off, you know. The only time I ever want to take the hard top off these days is night drives, and half the time I can't be bothered ;)

My wife adores riding in the Jaffa with the roof fown during nice late afternoons and early evenings. I feel it may be a major factor in the tolerance she has in me spending money on it. :D

One of my few secrets to a happy marriage is anticipating potential trouble spots and avoiding them.

I'll be watching your thing with much interest at Lakeside...
