eastern creek SP might have the edge thanks to more powa..
wakefield, SE with LSD and rubber might have the egde..

You haven't been reading all the posts have you :P

According to Casey, in Motor's BFYB the SP was quicker around Wakefield than the SE even with it's rolly polly stock NB8B suspension and lack of LSD. Imagine how well it would go with well setup suspension and an LSD.....

Well, given this topic is now 8 pages long, here it is again for reference. It was at Winton by the way, which is probably as much a test of handling as Wakefield plus it has a couple of long straights.

speaking of handling ability - the SP (1:44:70 - Cameron McConville) was just a little quicker around Winton then the SE (1:47:00 - Ian Luff).

Also, in the PCOTYs the SE (2005 16th) was up against a less competitive field then the SP (2002 4th). In fact, if the SE was in the same company as the 2002 PCOTY then it would have come around 19th or 20th against the SP's 4th outright.

Its not really fair to draw comparisons between the two cars. According to the PCOTY criteria, the SP is the same company as the M3, Carrera, Porsche Boxster S, Lancer EVO and WRX STi performance wise. The SE is barely scrapping amongst the hot hatches.

It's true the SP is faster in a straight line, no arguments there, but really, it is an inferior product. It is a great product, all MX5's are, but in comparison to the SE, it's an inferior product in all aspects bar one.

The suspension isn't as good, the engine isn't as good, the diff, isn't as good, the gearbox, isn't as good, the interior isn't as good, the stereo isn't as good, the build quality (in particular the turbo and intake setup) isn't as good....

I'm seeing a trend here.

Ah but PT, not only is the SP faster in a straight line, it's also faster around the track. Sounds to me like the SE is the inferior product unless your priorities are Bose stereos, leather seats, bling body kits and big ricer wheels.

Each to their own I guess...... :P

Depends on the track really...

But yes, each to their own.

I pass a motion we leave it at that and lock this thread.

I've answered Paul's PM regarding locking this thread.

I wanted some healthy debate and the pole shows opinion is trully divided.

Rather than turn things into a slagging match, thanks to everyone for quoting facts and figures, track times etc.

If it does turn into a pointless slag fest I'll lock it and we can all fight over something else.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Yepp, Gary's got it in one there. These are both great cars, one's undisputably faster, more powerful and has a shinier petrol cap, the other's got a number of other benefits (some equally undisputable, some less so).

Why is it that a number of us feel our self esteem threatened when others express a fondness for their own car, and feel the need to put down their choice? For those of us lucky enough to own one of these fine automobiles, which one we prefer is always likely to be coloured by which one we own at the time.

Each of these cars is a compromise, like every other vehicle on the road. I'm happy with the compromise I chose at the time (my choice was between the SE and the NC, as the SP was too old for the lease company I'm stuck with to even consider).

Cheers,
Alf

i agree Alf...........stupid part of ALL of this for me is, on sundays QLD run the front 4 cars were (in order) Jim in his '89 NA, Wayne & Litsa in their '94 Clubman NA, Kim & I in our '05 NC & Jules & his boy in the yella terra..........4 different cars, 4 different drivers.........& we had an absolute BALL all day, nobody felt they had to prove anything, we stuck pretty much to the speed limits (& Jims map reading  )............had some lighthearted banter & ribbing over lunch & all went home satisfied with a fantastic days driving.....WHY does there have to be this acrimonious divide between owners that without the model prefix are driving essentially the same automobile????........it's just beyond my understanding..........

Honestly I know NFI about either of them.... But IF i was planning on buying one I think I would just ignore all you bastards and take both for a good test drive and decide from there

\"Which OEM Turbo MX-5 Do You Prefer\"

You : Used to refer to the one or ones being addressed

Prefer : To choose or be in the habit of choosing as more desirable or as having more value

The interesting thing is reading WHY people prefer one or the other.

It think that a 50/50 vote would be the perfect way to close off the topic, but I don't want to be a forum nazi and close topics when I don't see a reason.

If you've shared your opinion then so be it, someone might join the thread later and have their own opinion to add. It's only when you dispute someone else's opinion that any issue may arise.

Since everyone has learnt to agree to disagree then it's all good.
