It is not a hard job, change the crankshaft seal at the same time.it is a job that needs to be done.

2. If belt breaks, what's the worst that can happen? Will the engine just stop as there is enough clearance between pistons and valves, or will terminal damage occur?

Geoff

from what ive read, there is enough clearance for the vlaves not to be damaged.

1. The crank pulley needs to be removed (though I think you called yours a harmonic balancer). The timing belt cog (which you called the pulley) can stay on.

2. No engine damage will occur if the timing belt snaps. But a belt replacement is cheaper than a tow + the timing belt replacement.

They're wrong in the first case. Both are non-interference engines. A snap of the timing belt will just result in one stranded MX-5.
