Greddy Turbo Kit ?

Postby tasroadster » Fri Sep 01, 2006 4:33 pm

Anyone running a Greddy Turbo Kit ?

What do you think of them ?

Any idea of the HP improvement ?
What boost do you run or the \"kit\" is set at ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards.

Are you talking about the povo kit WITHOUT AN INTERCOOLER?

If so, i'd factor in an intercooler and extra pipework into your budget.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Not using a HKS kit but a DIY homemade job
I like the no intercooler it made life simple :)
the best upgrade for more HP IMHO is an INTERCOOLER
Do you have a turbo or are you looking at getting one ??

No ....I have not purchase a thing yet..

I do like the idea of a simple setup.. then maybe some further development if I think I need it.... ie. intercooler etc ..

+ cost is a factor as well..... but not really into false ecconomy either ?

So... just finding out what people are happy with and learning as I go...

Thanks for your help.

regards.

Well in that case I'll tell you how I went about it
First thing on the list was to find and tune a stand alone ECU. Once you are happy with the way this runs start looking for a Turbo manifold
If you have a 1.6 this will be a piece of cake. once you have a manifold
find a turbo to suit (i got mine from Ebay) this has done over 3000km with out a problem just keep collecting parts untill you can put it all in .
I spent 4 months working on my turbo set up and I never was with out the car for more than 5 Hours :D and with all the High Qulity parts(except the turbo ) the cost to put the turbo on was under $1500
(plus a ECU ) could have done it better if i didn't HPC coat the manifold and dump pipe 8)

Yep.... I have a NA6...so need the kit for the 1.6

Also... I have read that a fairly std 1.6 can only take about 6psi boost without running into drama's.

IE: engine longivity etc.

Thanks again.

Basicly you need to keep an Eye on the Intake temp Hot air is bad air
With 7 psi and no intercooler i have see 75+ deg intake temp
The 1.6 can take about 14PSI on Std Interals with good control of fuel and timing
My Old mans NA6 with a super charger made 115KW on 5 PSI

My import came with the Greddy Kit (povo version).

Was pretty good compared to a stock MX-5, but with an intercooler and ECU its just out of this world!

From what I've read, it seems AVO is the way to go with you want a really decent setup. But a lot more expensive then a Greddy.

Holy crap!

It doesn't sound like the engine likes it!

I'd personally go custom as you get full control over what you're putting on and can make it exactly how you want.

Russellb is absolutely right about the planning side of it - plan everything you need to upgrade and get the parts before you start actually doing something to the engine.

I don't think it's possible to make turboing a car easy, is it? There are always either little niggling issues, or you have to spend a packet to upgrade everything, especially on an engine that doesn't come with a turbo originally...

Also - everything revolves around the turbo - pick the right one for your engine and then build everything else to fit it. And you have to work out what power you want and where in the rev range, before you pick the turbo.

Yep 75 DEG  but that was at 6000 in 3rd gear after moving swifty away from the lights
My engnie has 211000+kms on it and has never been opened :!:

If you go with a garret turbo there are plenty of variation with in the range
I found for the 1.8 that the hardest part to find was the turbo manifold
but our freindly Mania people hade one :)
Give them a call they may have a manifold to suit the 1.6

The Greddy kit has the TDo4H-15G turbo.

Can you change the boost on this setup ?

What sort of HP figures could you expect at 6psi without / with an Intercooler?

For that matter what HP figures would the basic kit produce.......ie. no ecu change, nil intercooler.... ????

What would be the power range for this turbo?
I have notice the HKS kit use the T25 AR63 turbo????

Thanks again.

I have done a bit of reading on the GReddy kits as it is the kind of thing I am looking. I know after I buy it i will want more power, but finacial restraints (and being 20) means that more power than that is out of the question.

I'm not sure what GReddy states is the figure, but from forums and FAQs i've read, they run between 4.0-5.5PSI. That is quite a difference depending on where you look. However, nearly all sources say that about 104rwkW is the outcome for the NA6, bolt on, drive away. One thing that was recomended was getting a boost adjustor and a boost gauge, and up the boost to 6PSI. This is safe for car, turbo and the computer. Also, becasue the TDo4H is quite laggy on the 1.6L, a knock sensor and some kind advance retard device can work wonders. That way, run 16deg adv until the turbo spools, giving you that much needed torque before the blower is fully spooled at 4-4.5Krpm, where the advance is retarded to about 6deg.

This site is a pretty good one, and talks a lot less sh!t than I do..  It also has some estimates on price.

I have to buy a new soft top fairly ugently, I didn't realise how bad roof was, but it's been raining for the last week... I'm driving with a towel on the seat... :x After that, saving my pennis for hair dryer
