I did it... and it works!
I just completed my first timing belt, alternator belt and power steering belt change!!!
yay for me.. and the car still works...

just a little question about the intake cam alignment.
I was arguing with my dad about the alignment of the intake came. At the from of the gear I was saying that it should lign up with the E mark on the gear and the engine head.
Dad was saying that there is a mark at the back near the CAS that needed to line up. I was dong some reading and couldn't find any mention of this mark anywhere in any texts.
Anyway, we lined it up to the mark on the cams and the CAS instead of the E on the cam gears. So i think the intake cam gear is about 4 degrees forward of the E mark on the engine head.
The engine sounds and feels like it has its timing advanced but not quite. cos its still set on 10 at the moment.
Anyone knows what happens when you don't have the intake cam lined up to particular marks? In arguing with dad and then giving in to him, have i just produced more power for my car?

1 tooth on the sotck cam drive gears is allegedly worth 12degrees.
I once put mine back together 1 tooth out - and it was VERY obvious. The car idled like sh*t, ran like sh*t and had no power. It could not even make it up the driveway to the road.
The indicators on the front of the engine are the ones to use.
Intake cam E = E on the head.
Exhaust cam I = I on the head. Don't know why they chose those indicators but there you go.

If you have put the belt on, didn't touch the CAS and your ignition timing hasn't changed (on an NA6), then the intake cam is aligned correctly.
One tooth is about 7 degrees (there are about 50 teeth on the cam wheel).

The other trick is to make sure your inlet cams number 1 lobes point to the inlet manifold (parallel to the ground) and your exhaust cams number 1 lobes are pointing to the exhaust manifold (parallel to the ground) when the engine is at #1 TDC. And, there should be 19 teeth on the belt between the gears. Rotate the engine two full revolutions and they should all still be the same. Never fails.

nope
i didn't have to take the main crank bolt off which would have been a bitch... but i didn't see any leaks or anything from the area after i gave it a good old clean. so the main crank seal didn't need to be replaced.
so.. over all pretty easy.
too me two weekends cos im constantly going out and drinking but it should have taken me that long
