Not to sound like a kill joy guys, but have any of you checked to see if having an exposed pod is street legal? I've been told that an un-encapsulated pod is a defect in NSW. Perhaps someone can clarify.

The BEGi system is sought of encapsulated.

I have heard something along those lines, but the heat shield separates it enough from the engine bay surely?

From the EPA site in nsw.

Noise from filters and valves

Avoid fitting your vehicle with a pod-type air filter. This filter increases engine induction noise and may also increase exhaust gas pollution. Under clause 20 of the Regulation, it is an offence to modify an engine's air intake when it results in an engine noise level exceeding the maximum level specified in the Regulation.

Modifying or repairing an engine so the exhaust system noise level exceeds the prescribed level or altering an air intake system or exhaust system so the noise level exceeds the noise limit (clause 20)

Do not fit blow-off valves that vent directly into the atmosphere. Blow-off valves that vent back into the induction system are allowed.

Waste gate valves are nonstandard pressure release valves for turbochargers. These devices increase the noise from engines and can cause disturbance. If you are fitting these valves, ensure they do not vent directly into the atmosphere but into the exhaust system upstream of any mufflers.

defective noise control equipment includes:

(a) equipment that allows the emission of more noise than the original noise control equipment fitted by the vehicle manufacturer, or

(b) equipment that has, in the opinion of an authorised officer, been modified in a way that makes it less effective than it would have been if not for the modification, or

(c) equipment that allows gas to escape from a place other than the intended exhaust outlet, or

(d) if the equipment concerned comprises a system of mufflers—the system contains fewer mufflers than the original system fitted by the vehicle manufacturer.

The way its worded you could be defected for a variety of reasons and it doesnt have to be loud, I guess the onus is upon you to prove otherwise.

Refering to the AEM on the mazdaspeed

http://mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php?topic=7658.0

That doesnt sound good, if its anything like the pod on boyracer's racey, it will probably exceed the legal decibel limit. No disrespect intended to you lou, i like the way your racey sounds ......

I just had a PM back from Aricjm15 and he said for 4 we're looking at US$210/each and US$125 for shipping (the shipping price is for 2 to QLD and 2 to NSW). So that's US$965 in total. Any better than your contact, PT?

XE.com says that's just over AU$300 each:

241.25 USD = 305.074 AUD
(1 AUD = 0.790793 USD)

EDIT: He also said someone else has sent him an e-mail for 5 of these shipped to Sydney today, was that anyone here?

Not sure whats going on, however im still interested in a group buy. If its about the EPA thing PT, I posted that to clarify an issue and for us to be aware what we up for, im a pesemistic old kodger at times but im still happy to take that risk.

If you want to know how the AEM sounds, have a view of this, disregard the blow off, dyno figures from what ive seen on the mazdaspeed show about a 15hp gain

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2333929

As C+C has stated, we need to ensure that we get all bits. It would be preferable if we could get it from someone local, that way if there is an issue, it should be able to be resolved easily.

I to have emailed a few places from the US, but I havent managed to get a better price.

I just had a chat to Aricjm15 on ICQ and he said that he is fine to check the contents of the packages before shipping them over to us, so that's a big bonus.

Thats re-assuring. There is also Mania, I can email Simone and ask if she can get these in, at least with mania we gonna get some sort of support if we run into trouble.

C+C wrote:So we have 4 confirmed for the AEM (myself, PT, Saboteur and Blackster), can you please contact the suppliers to confirm on this. So i guess this will make delivery cheaper if split 4 ways ;)

I confirmed that price earlier this evening, it's only the exchange rate that can change now. We'll need a destination address for the Sydney blokes. For PT and I, I don't mind if it goes to either place.

How about we go with this source if we haven't heard anything positive back from Mania or Quantum by COB tomorrow?

EDIT: One other thing, who's got the best credit card as far as international purchases are concerned? I get stung with fees each time! :x

Do these actually include the filter, or just the intake...
