HELMETS: What, where and how much?

Postby veecee » Sat Feb 10, 2007 10:40 am

Hi, I want to get into a few track days this year and looking for a helmet. So the question is what to buy, where to buy it from and approximately how much?

Cheers,

Vincent

My advise is ...buy the best thing you can possibly afford ..you only get one
brain ...i see alot of people at track days wearing the worst helmets
.....basically in a crash they would do jack .....

Guys, I'm an absolute newbie so I really don't know what is good or bad. I agree when it comes to safety equipment spending more is not an issue. BTW, I'm in Sydney.

If you were riding a motor bike I'd suggest that Fish is on the money. I spent $700 on my bike helmet.

When it came to the car, it was too high and hit the roof (its too slow with the roof down) and I had to drive with a bent neck. I also found it a bit clostraphobic in the warm up and cool down laps, especially on warm days.

I bought an open face bucket from the bike shop for $66 and its great. In the car, with a harness on you can hit the window seat or roll bar and the bucket will protect from all of that. Where it will fall down is in a roll compared to an expensive alternative but I really wouldn't want to try that.

I'd spend some money on a roll bar and harness.

Open Face, nice and light, plenty of vision and ventilation.

You are not riding a bike.

Bear in mind that if you progress to some other forms of motorsport (eg hillclimbs), they may require a full face helmet with an open top car.

My last helmet (as well as my Fiance/Nav's) was purchased at a local motorbike dealer (who has a good range of helmets) and based on what would fit our respective heads, I spent around 500 on mine and 250 on my Nav's (mate's rates). These are good quality bike helmets with al;l the right stickers on them to keep CAMS happy...

Yup, I agree with the Baron.

I sit in the silly seat in a rally car here in SA and a nice open face with not too much weight is ideal

Last thing you want is a lot of wieght on your head or closed face when no-one else can hear you scream........... 8)

Just to add a little extra,

Pretty well all sup regs require a pair of goggles or suitable eye protection with an open face, nothing special! Even some of the V8 guys ran an open face at Bathurst, why, light and great ventilation.

Sitting in a que at Eastern Creek with a full face in 40 deg heat totally confinced me on open face.

Bell do a totally feather light jobbie, you don't even know you have it on.
