Mazda Cup / MG Racing Oran Park July 6th, 7th, 8th

Postby mx5racing » Thu Apr 12, 2007 5:41 pm

Hi all,

Peter Whitten from MG Racing has been in touch regarding the next event at O/Park. Sam Silvestro has contacted him about running the Mazda Cup and the MG Racing committee are keen to have this happen. Basically we need 20 starters which I believe will be easily achievable.

For those of you that have not competed with them previously the weekend will consist of qualifying and 2 races on the Saturday and 3 races Sunday. For a small additional fee you can also participate in the practice on Friday. More details can be found here - www.mgracing.com.au

For those that don’t wish to race there are numerous regularity events and the head clearance/roll cage issue is no problem. In the past events there were some competitors with no roll cage at all

If we could get some of the QLD and VIC people there it would be terrific. Im sure the usual NSW gang will be there.

So let me know your thoughts and please spread the word around.

Regards,

Chris.

Please elaborate on this \"Mazda Cup\". Is there a repository of information somewhere?

Hi Matt,

The term Mazda Cup was used a few years ago when it was a race for Mazdas only.

We would dearly love to have a MX5 only race similar to the ones held in QLD but for numerous reasons this has not eventuated. It’s hoped that if we have an all Mazda race to get things started this might kick on an MX5 only race at future events. We only need 20 starters and finding 20 racing Mazda’s should not be too hard??

I know the MG Racing committee is working on an exciting event at a world class track for next year. So let’s hope we can get this off the ground and get our own MX5 racing category started here in NSW. The QLD guys do such a fantastic job. Let’s face it - to attract enough interest to be invited to compete at a V8 Supercars event is no mean feat.

Anyway the upcoming Oran Park event also has the regularity and this always attracts great cars and is a huge amount of fun. I’m sure there will be many starters in MX5’s for this too. This will be held on the full track and who knows how many more events will be held on this fantastic track before it closes. :(

Regards,

Chris.

Guys, these events are a great event for those who wish to race, but their car may not be fully CAMS/Prodsports compliant. For example, turbo NA models are eligible as is any road going car for the supersprints. It is basicly a step above the club days - equivalent to state level supersprinting. When you get more serious, then you can step up and compete in the race event as well.

A road registered 2F car would be a long term, great value edition to your garage. If you have ever wanted to race but don't think you can afford it -this is your event. 8)

So how is the field looking?

I'd love to compete at an event like this, but I would want a dedicated race car and to have the nevessary licence.

So probably not this time, but it will happen.

Matt

It would be a fantastic thing to get a 'Spec Miata' 'Mazda Cup' type Championship happening in NSW and I would love to be involved in making it happen.

I am definately there in the SE...not sure how the field is looking but there should be about 10 MX5s...

Matt...they also do regularity at these meeting, there are a few MX5 guys that do it,just need a LS2 and a car that complies to supersprint regs.

Matildas race car is going to be sold soon, would make a good, cheap, reliable car to start in.

Mild deviation, I'll warrant. But how are the QLD boys organised?

Is there a Mazda Cup type committee running events independently from other organisations such as the FoSC?

With the amount of NA6s now on offer at what I consider to be very cheap prices (based on a recent search on eBay) , surely this would a fun and affordable category for racing in the future.

QLD has an MX5 Racing association whereas in NSW, we run as part of Production Sports. QLD is strictly 2A, 2B and 2F cars. The 2F cars have a strict set of rules (not dissimilar to Spec Miata) which only apply to QLD. In NSW, we run 2B cars in classes determined by power to weight so that cars regardless of marque, can compete against each other. We also have a few 2F cars not governed by a specific set of MX5 rules but rather by CAMS 2F rules

However, I personally would dearly love to see an MX5 only class develop in NSW. To start it would have to accept all comers, but the goal should be to eventually align with the QLD rules.

So, buy a hack, stick a cage in it, and come racing. This way, we have develop an affordable place to race into the future. But remember, just being part of it is the fun bit, you don't have to win to enjoy your motor racing.

So reviewing the Prod Sports Class Championship Point Score, we have 7 (?) MX5s competing in this series. Do we know what sort of numbers are competing in the FoSC series?

Does anyone have any idea of a rough cost to get one of the rolling shells at MX5 Mania up to scratch for Prod Sports? Obviously will need an engine!

FoSC is an event (or series of events) - not a racing association. The same cars can compete in each.

Cheapest way to get motor racing is a road registered 2f car. That way, you car drive to and from the track and with limited mods, be up and racing for little more than the cost of a cage and some tyres. Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT build your own car if you can help it. I've nearly finished my second, and I still wonder why - financially, it doesn't always make sense!!!

Hope - heard nothing as yet - maybe they'll just run it as an event like the mix and match events?
