this is great news.
there didnt seem to be many groups of racing that would let you go so silly with modifications for the mx5.
just wondering is there a power to wight limit for each class?

It's a Victorian Series........and I seriously doubt an n/a MX5 with less than 125rwkw would even be remotely competitive against things with SR20s and the like.
Build a 2F MX5 and race in prodsports - we have 5 x 1 hour races next year in NSW, QLD and Victoria with shorter sprint races as well. Not to mention the MG race meetings and you could be racing every second weekend for a few months of 2007.
Not that I've got anything against our sports sedan breathren - for the record.

The only example where I can compare a race MX5 to the two litre sports sedan was in 2004 at Phillip Island. My MX5 (Fanta) would have been 4th on the grid in the two litre field. The front runner was only one second faster. Given more experience at PI I think we could have challenged for the lead.
Don't underestimate the mx5 as a race car.

I haven't seen any SR20 powered beasts in the prod sports car races, any particular reason for that? Or is it just that they didn't come out in anything that handles well?
For cossie55 - this class is obviously <2L Nat Asp, but can you do engine swaps and what not? I think a bored out 1.8 would go very well against an sr20. They can't bore it out at all surely
cause if they did they'd be over capacity?

In prod sports, you must run the block that the car came out with so you can't do what improved production classes do and stick an SR20 in a 120y - but the 200SX S15s that we have seen are pretty competitive when setup properly. Prod sports is also power to weight so you can go nuts on overbores - as long as it's the right block to start with.

Thanks Jamie - that explains it a bit better. It definitely sounds like good fun racing. The problem will always be blokes with fat wallets who want to win trophies. Prod sports was a cheap category before it got Porker GT3'ed.

It's hard to see MX5s coming last. Their sites shows best times at Winton are around 1:35. A cheap, stripped down old MX5 with a bored out 1800 up against Escorts, Fiat 124s, Datsuns and Corollas could be pretty good proposition.
Looks like fun ... sort of 4-pot dodgems on bitumen. There's a fair few door scrapes in those photos. Best to buy your cages and harnesses first.

I watched Inside Speed the other night and saw Tyrone Smith come from the back of the grid in two races to trounce a field of 2litre sedans and the odd (very odd) V8. Really great grassroots racing. Well worth a look.
