Cruise Control - NB8A

i want and need cruise control in my NB8A... :mrgreen:

how can i do it? how hard? what costs? etc...

Its no big deal - unless you have an SP, which you don't because they are NB8Bs

.

Mazda (used to?) sell a 'factory' setup, but its was too exxy for me. I just bought an aftermarket one from a local autoelectrician who fitted the factory one for the dealer. It cost around $350 iirc, it was about 5 years ago, and I wouldn't be without it

You shouldn't (generally) install vacuum actuated CC on a forced induction car - you should instead be using a stepper motor acuated CC with FI. For this reason Mazda dealers wouldn't fit CC to SPs (and probably not SE's either). Still this is no loss as most of the aftermarket CC's I've seen fitted look far more integrated then the dealer fit units.

The problem with FI is that if you have the CC set for 110km/h and come up to a steep hill, more and more throttle is required to maintain speed. However as the turbo will now be making boost, there is no additional vacuum available to pull on the extra throttle and the speed will fall away unless you manually intervene.

Vacuum systems will still work with turbos, but they need a reservoir and a one-way check valve installed. Even then, there may still be the odd hill that is long and steep enough to defeat the cruise.

I can highly recomend the Auscruise system. Its fitted to our SP and Lexus.

cruise control aye..

if you wish to limit your speed e.g. to 60km/h, was there a certain gear your car would need to be on or is that speed selectable on any gear?

Yes - Auto Meter boost gauge. Only used to keep an eye on things, hence the out-of-the-way installation.

It can be set in any gear you like - even 60km/h in 6th if you must. Most would have a minimum speed they will engage at - usually about 30km/h.

Make sure you get a clutch switch fitted on all manual cars - the cruise should automatically disengage if you tap either the brake or the clutch pedals.

The AusCruise can be set up such that if you set the cruise for say 80km/h while in 5th, then change up to 6th, it will momentarily disengage, then a second or two after the clutch is released, resume at the set speed.

yeah, something that caught me out first time i used cruise in the NC......... a simple tap on the clutch doesn't work, you nearly have to have the clutch right in

............'s ok tho, once you get used to them thar fancy steerin' wheel controls :mrgreen:

isnt the control on the wiper or blinker arm?

You mght be able to adjust the engagement point of the clutch pedal switch. You realy want the cruise to disengage while the clutch is still gripping strongly, otherwise you'll be hammering the rev limiter.

There's 2 switches on the clutch, sounds like it's wired into the incorrect one AJ!
