yes, happend to me on my original '92.

In my case the high beam came on, but the headlights didn't pop up....same outcome though, a flat battery.

I think the reason why your headlights pop up and mine didn't is because the later models have a function whereby if you pull back on the headlight stalk the headlights will pop up and flash of a brief second. This is known as the 'flash to pass' function. I bet that if you were to pull back on the stalk by a fraction of a mm the head lights will pop up and stay there.

I believe it is caused by wear in the headlight/indicator/wiper combination switch....mainly (i believe) with the headlight stalk. It only happened in warm weather
I'm only aware of two fixes.
Replace the combination switch....or
I pushed the headlight stalk forward when ever I parked the car....this stopped the issue in my case.

I do the same
had a combination in my garage for two years now just never got round to fitting it!
