re turbo

Postby Novice1 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:52 am

The car has just left for tuning at Advanced Performance Centre, Underwood.

One problem may be the 500 cc injectors. Haltech Interceptor may have trouble handling 500cc injectors. We shall see.

Oh yeah I have one superflous set of Loch Stewart Extractors, perfect condition. I will put up a post of same as soon as I can . Expressions of interest . Fit 99 model NB.

Great to hear the car is driveable AND started first time too!

I'll be around this weekend, if the car is back, and take some photos of the extractors.

I, have passed the message on to Garry re the person in USA who is

trying to contact him. He will look at the post tonight Brisbane time, on

the qld mx5 forum.

Personally, I can say that Garry is one of the most helpful guys around.

Has answered any questions I have had, leant me tools and assisted me

where he could.

Excellent! Great to hear it.

If the Haltech won't go; get a MegaSquirt with WideBand O2 sensor...

Your extractors and the Haltech will sell for about the cost of the megasquirt... 8)

Post the dyno graph when you get the car back.

MegaSquirt is great.... so I've heard....
Mine is playing up, but I am crossing every body part that it's my CAS that is causing me grief.
Matt at DIYautotune in the US is a top bloke and his service has been exceptional.

Hopefully the interceptor has enough functionality to be able to compensate for the larger injectors.

re turbo install

Postby Novice1 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:00 am

As they say no news is good news. They started the tuning on my car mid

afternoon and so far no problems.

From memory I did enquire about the Megasquirt for my 99 engine and

it wasn't all smooth sailing, hence why I went Haltech.

The megasquirt forum 4 pages of it, just an observation but most people

seem to have a number of problems with the megasquirt and other things

on their car playing together. As I said just an observation, not a criticism.

The MegaSquirt isn't for the faint of heart. If you enjoy tinkering and want to put some time into it without going to the cost of an aftermarket ECU + tuning - the MS is your ticket.

So what's the latest?

The latest is my car will hopefully be ready tomorrow afternoon. The

Haltech interceptor doesn't fit the bill OUCH! so its an E8 Haltech being

put in tomorrow and bread and water for the next few months.

Oh Yeah anyone wanna buy a Haltech Interceptor

and some lovely Loch Stewart extractors:)

i am pretty sure that mercury motorsport work with haltechs. they have quite a bit of experience with turbos as well but not that many mx5's. I would go to chiptorque. they did my car with great results (supercharged though) but more importantly did the factory tune for the sp mx5. they know what they are doing.

Yes they did. I think it was more a matter of doing what they were told by Mazda though. Have you sat behind an SP when it's puffing before? There is a reason there's only 2 white SP's and so many Blecks

Ask Benny about the difference between a factory tune and a standalone on an SP.

Thats debatable. They managed to stuff the tune on my car, claiming all the time that they didn't. Then recently gave me another tune that seems to be much better though I haven't had a chance to test it fully yet.

Jules,

To be fair to Chiptorque and the original SP tune. They were restricted by what they could do by having to use the stock MX5 ECU which was never designed to run a turbo installation, while also conforming to new car emission schedules which are much more strict than those applying to used cars, while making the tune conservative enough for the cars to last through the 4 year unlimited km extended factory warranty. I'm sure they could have done a better job if they didn't have all of those constaints placed on them.

Garry, isn't that pretty much what I said? Albeit in twice as many words
