[REVIEW] Autoexe Ram Air Intake for NC

Postby CoffeeBoss » Thu Aug 21, 2008 2:57 pm

Have recently had a new intake installed by IS Motor Racing in my NC.

It's the Autoexe Ram Air Intake.

Before:

After:

This intake is made to spec for Autoexe by GruppeM of Japan, who are a 'premium' manufacturer of intakes for a number of sports cars, most notably Porsches and the like. And a few of the cooler Japanese products like the Toyota Altezza and Mazda Roadster :D It uses a 'ram air' scoop to pull cold air from inside the grill, and in typical GruppeM fashion, pools this air around the intake so the engine has plenty of cool, non-turbulent air to pull from on throttle opening.

The intake is a standard pod-type filter from K&N.

For those who don't know me, I've been being behind the wheel of a couple of NA's and NB's over the years. The one thing that dissapointed me about the NC was the 'soft' throttle response. I put this down mainly to the fact that my model is the one with DSC. Most cars with electronic systems attached/running the throttle tend to have that delay in response. EVO writes that Lotus are one of the few manufacturers they have dríven who seem not to be effected by this.

So, I was particularly pleased to find this intake markedly improved the throttle response in my NC, right from that initial throttle opening. It's much, much better. Heel & toe downshifts are now even more enjoyable.

The other big improvement is in the only other area i would really criticise the stock NC - top end power delivery. The stock car seems to plateu above 5000rpm. It feels like it runs out of puff, but really it's just not giving you much more than you've been getting via that solid mid-range of the MZR engine. Now, it's got a much nicer pickup above 5K, and really charges towards the 7000rpm cut out. I much prefer the power delivery now. My 'seat of the pants' dyno doesn't seem to detect any power/torque loss in the mid range, but really this is best determined with a before/after dyno run, which i didn't have time for this time around.

All in all, an excellent quality intake for a daily driver like my car, as it would want to be given the cost (i was fortunate enough to get hold of a 'near new' second hand one).

In summary:

Improvements:
- better throttle response
- marked improvement in power delivery above 5000rpm
- enclosed intake for defect-free enjoyment.
- basically invisible externally.

Compromises:
- some cutting of the plastic lining behind the bumper required (not visible outside)
- $$$
- sound (not the intake for someone looking for some big induction noise)

Good review thunderbird.. But with autoexe, i think the compromise here is

Pardon my ignorance... wouldn't it be easier to just mod the existing airbox and put in an additional inlet/snorkle?

Has anyone done any measure to see if the current inlet/airbox is restrictive to any great degree?

I'm stuffed if I can see how there could be much improvement at all. Compare the OEM intake :?

Perhaps its a better air filer (could just try and K&N panel etc.) or greater filter surface area provided by a cone.

The auto exe might work as a bit of a "ram air" intake.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

You can't see anything at all from the outside of the car, JBT :D

From the drivers seat, i can assure you, the difference is quite dramatic.

I expect a dyno would show a slight increase in power at the top end.

But hey, i'm probably just justifying the money spent, so don't take my word for it ;) You can see for yourself from my drivers seat should ever we meet :D

Looks difference looks evident to me. The standard air box is chambered yeah? With a panel filter? The AutoExe unit (at least on the 6 and the 3, pretty sure it's the same on this) houses a pod.

If nothing else, it looks HOT! Nice work Thunderbird2
MX5 Wanted. SE or NC (forced induction preferred  )

Ah, yeah, kinda left that bit out, didn't I!

It houses a K&N pod, which is the other plus, as it is an easily cleanable and replaceable K&N part.

Updating original post now (as if it wasn't long enough already).

gruppeM FTW!

Obviously you can DIY something similar, or maybe purchase something else half the price.

But I wouldn't trust any other company making intakes.

Of course we all know that replacing a OEM paper filter with a K&N give f*ck all extra kW ;) And that has been proven

*shrugs* depends on the position/installation of the intake, depends upon what engine/car your talking about.

I'm certain there is 'more area under the graph' in my car now then there was before, but really no point speculating without dyno runs. IMHO it's worth it for the improvement in throttle response alone, which is akin to installing a lighter flywheel. I wouldn't expect anywhere near as much improvement on a B series motor, simply because they already have much better throttle response. An improvement in the feel of the car from the drivers seat translates to more fun behind the wheel for this driver, and that counts more to me than max power figures and the like.

But for those that like numbers on paper, read on:

I am talking about making no other change other than the OEM paper filter (clean) with a K&N filter. Strangely enough paper filters do a very good job (flow and filtering) overall :)
