Track day tyre pressures on road tyres.

Postby tbro » Sun Oct 05, 2008 11:30 am

Hi all,

I'm sure their are many who would appreciate input from experienced Track dayers and racers.

As per the title, I'm interested in what tyre pressures other people are running and if and when you adjust
at the track?

I'm currently using Bridgestone RE001's 195/50/15 on 15x7 racing wheels, Whiteline adjustable front bar set on soft, everything else is standard Clubman spec.

At QR we are advised to set our tyres to 36psi cold by Doug.

I've heard so many different opinions it isn't funny, and then people will always tell you you should run Rspec tyres for good times.

I'm sure R spec tyres are good for 2+ seconds a lap but like most I really can't justify spending $1200 on tyres just for track days at this point of time.

I've read comments from Magna Blue and others about staying with a stock car and learning to drive before spending Big $$$$ on mods, to me very sensible comments.

Any other advise for track day learners whould be greatly appreciated by all!! :D :D

I set 34 psi cold on the 17" Bridgestone RE050A and 32 psi on the 16" Yokohama Advan A11A povo packs.

After some advice on pressures from Brian F, who races one of the quickest MX-5s around QR, I found the Advans worked a bit better with 32 psi cold (vs 36 psi). I haven't fiddled with the Bridgestones because the grip was just so superior to the Yokos and I've only tried them once - like at the last track day when it was but greasy in places.

40 hot worked OK for me at the Island on the RS2s.
I think I ran 30 or 32 cold at Sandown, was a little slower that day (no lap record...).

I run 40 psi hot on 15" P6000.

I tend to do some minor adjustments to suit the track as it changes but only by a max of 2 psi. This is at Wakefeild Park.

Your best bet is to start at a pressure and experment using your lap times and car feel to let you know.

Good like and have fun. :) :)

I'm running 40 PSI hot on the same tyres, but on the factory NB8A 15x6 wheels. I still think there's more fine tuning I can do on the pressures, but it's working for the moment.

Hi guys, I have recently started racing on the track in winton.
I am running 195/55/15 Potenza RE01 front and Goodyear 205/50/15 at the rear.
Wondering how much difference would tyre pressure make? and for a 30 degree( ard 35-38 on the track) day, wad sort of psi shld I run hot?
Thanks

I've got re001's on 15's and I run about 36PSI cold, I'm not an expert on tyre pressures but they felt spot on and very predictable.

I'm running the same tyres, but after the last track day, I've started to understand pressures for tyres a lot more. It's not actually about the tyre pressure, but more about the operating temperature of the tyre. For example if it's a cold day, 36 PSI cold will work well, because 40 PSI hot on a cold day gets the tyres to, say, temperature x. If it's a hot day, maybe 32 PSI cold will work since it will get the tyres to temperature x once they're warm.

If you're just starting out, those values I've given above are a good starting point for those tyres. Then adjust them on the day to get to the amount which gives you optimum grip.
