I think I killed my motor :(

I did the same thing at Eastern Creek.

I picked up a second hand engine (was about a grand), and put all new seals, water pump etc on it - it runs better than the original engine so for a grand was an easy out and you still get to play mechanic without going in too deep is you want to get your hands dirty.

As suggested I also put in a baffle in the sump from Maruha in Japan just for some extra security - get a lightweight flywheel from them too, I love mine!!

@ Mactype: I like the Sump Baffle, how much was it worth, and where did you get it?
Much as getting a spare motor would be a senseable idea, my motor only has 20,000km on it, so should (fingers crossed!) not require too much work besides the screwed bearing.
Also I feel the urge to build an all out awesome motor now (and have an excuse!)

@ Wun: Of course, I need to take a ton of photos to remember where things go, so i will do a nice build diary thread for those interested :D (P.S I think my lack of underwear at wakefield got me at least another 2 seconds a lap in lost weight and improved testicle cooling effcientcy, thank you for your wise ideas....)

Also, anyone here run an 11:1 comp motor before, did you have to run it on race fuel/diesel/dead squirrels?

Would oversize valves give any gains on a 1.9 with 805c cams do you reckon?

Looking forward to getting into the build.. its going to be beasty :D

I rebuilt the motor in my old gemini, it was my cherry and it was the most satisfying feeling to start that fresh built motor up 1st atempt, all be a bit out of time but she went.

It took me over 2 months to do the build and the G series Isuzu motors are very simple. If your planning to do the motor in your 5, budget alot of time to research and reading and most of all, take your time and follow the old saying, measure twice, cut once, in every thing you do.

In the end it probably cost me just as much to rebuild it in parts, maching cost and time spent than if i had simply swapped the old busted one for a reco'd long block, but i came away with alot more knowledge about how an engine works and a warm fuzzy feeling because "I did it" and i didn't have to pay someone else to do it :)

Good luck and most of all, Enjoy!

@ Madboy: Thanks for your words, makes me feel a bit more confident :D

Have bugeted about 4-5months for the rebuild, that should do it!

I plan to be more OCD than ever before on this job, will label/bag/file in little trays everything i can, and keep it all clean enough to eat off :D

If you're going to tackle it, make sure you have the right tools. It will help a great deal with having the right gear.

Agreed Hammer, I figure up to $1k in my budget for tools, as im want to do this with all my own tools, not bum off my friends garage like usual! :P

So Current Plan is (Jeez im on a mad posting spree today) - Please comment if you wish, keen to know if im on track :D

*FM Rebuild Kit (oversize bearings as appropriate to the stuffed-ness of the crank)
*Whatever Machining is needed to fix the damage, Crank might need some work, rod might be flowered.
*Wiseco 11:1 Pistons - 2mm Overbore for 1.92L
*Tighe 805C Regrinds
*Gasket/Port Match and remove casting flash from ports (no actual reshaping)
*Lightweight Flywheel (whats the best way to go here?)
*Maruha Sump Baffle
*ARP Bolts on everything they go on :P
*New Radiator

And stuff that im not sure about - any help appreciated :>

*Oversize Valves (worth the trouble?)
*Shot Peen the Rods (Don't want to screw a rod at the track is my thought.)
*Balencing Stuff?
*Better Valve Springs (again, High RPM reliabilty, worth it?)
* Adjustable cam gears (cheapish, but any gains to be had with the 805c?)
*New Oil & Water Pumps? (seems like a good idea, but the motor is only 20k-km old so may be a waste)

Budget is $4000 - $5000 including tools and machining..

Sound like an ok plan?, im not in it for allout nuts power, just a decent road/track motor with some go and that is not likely to go pop

Thanks for listening to my rants, im just kinda excited lol  8)

wow dude, car will be a beast!

i had the short nose crank issue with me NA6, i decided against a rebuild and went for a low km Longnose import. If i had the cash i would have done a rebuild with all the goodies but cash and time did not permit :frown:

Just on the pistons....if you're thinking of putting a turbo or supercharger in the future, David of Mania recommends Arias piston on top of Wiseco. Cost about the same but the Arias can tolerate higher temp - so I'm told. He has used these on his race car for a number of years and has not had a failure yet. These were also fitted in my recent SP engine rebuild.

If you're sticking to naturally aspirated, then Wiseco will do the job well.

Are you going to look at conrods as well? Or are you keeping the original? If you're going to replace these as well, for about half the price of Carrillo Rods, the Eagle rods is what David recommends. David says, they're almost identical to the Carrillo's bar the price. But Carrillo still rules - if you have the funds.

Good luck with it. Keep us posted with Photos, as I'll be keen to follow up on this.

Going to stick NA, besides, with 11:1 compression i think all hope of a turbo is gone! :D

Dunno about rods, the pistons are less for strength and more for compression/displacement, and im not sure how much stronger the rods really need to be, any opinions?, I Don't really see the motor seeing more than 7500rpm or so, as i don't think the cams will really support many more revs, also I would think the the lifters/tappets, would be unhappy before the rods

I will be sure to keep everyone updated with photos and such :D

Search is your friend...

Try here, and on the big board. Lots of good info there, but you do have to sieve it thoroughly
