I strongly agree with Okibi's point and also recommend the best tyres you can afford (along with brake & suspension) as the first thing to change for all my customers.

There is nothing else in contact with the road except for your tyres. I will chime in with what many others have already asked which is how much is your life, your passenger or any other third/fourth/etc party worth?

I run Bridgestone RE55 semi-slicks all the time for approx 2400 km (2hr monthly cruises) a year and track days or competition. Granted not everyone will do this but even my EVO will be getting RE001 Adrenalin Potenza tyres as I am not satisfied with my "import compliance" tyres.

Buying a sports car like the MX5 with its great handling prowess to put on sub-par tyres is sacrilegious to me.

There is good constructive advice in this thread. 8)

I agree essentially with what you guys are saying regarding getting the best. But the best is all relative. Someone people cannot afford the kind of rubber that many including myself run. 300 a corner which equates to 1200 a car for about 20-30km a year is a big hit in anyone pocket.

Yet its all relative, safety and performance is a fine balance on any tyre which manufactures try to adhere too. Most mid range sport/performance tyres that are affordable are still decent daily tyres and will most likely perform exceptionally well when you or your passengers safety are at a risk.

In saying that, taking sub par tyres to a track or on twisty roads and driving enthusiastically is going to put you more at risk as the tyres that you have chosen are not suited to the purpose. I am a person that believes you pay to your purpose but if you can afford better then you do so. Everyone does not have deep pockets and there are decent tyres out there that will save your life when it is required.

In all seriously one would think its more a persons ability to react with the right decision at the right time that saves lives and at all times drive with responsibly. Thou those extra % because of your equipment and cars ability also help.
