BTW You do know that you cant drive the same in the wet as you drive in the dry right??? It seems like a lot of people think you can get miracle rubber that treat the wet like its dry. Unless your willing to get one set of wet tyres and one set of dry tyres like motor sports then keep dreaming.

Even then F1-F3-M GT have to change their driving technique to suit the conditions.

You instantly assume i drive like a "drifter wannabe" in the wet? yeah right. I dont appreciate your sarcasm, i simply stated that i wanted tyres that were "good" in the wet, they dont have to stick amazingly well but just incase a situation arises where i need that extra grip, it would be good to have, also i currently have low budget comfort tyres so anything is better than those in the wet  .

I hope this makes a bit more sense to you. :)

I've had the G3's and they are a very good tyre, very happy with them in the wet and a very good price. I love the RE001s in the dry but I have not had any experience with them in the wet so can't comment on wet weather performance.

I have a set of RE001s (japan made) and they are really shocking in the wet.

however! my RE001s are a bit worn and I think have hardened a little bit from excess heat (they've been tracked a few times and have been overheated a few times)

they still have plenty of tread, but I havent dríven on another set i the wet, so I dont know if it's just my ones or if it's RE001 in general.

on the flip side, they are very good in the dry.

Didn't assume anything, was just sending a message. And you of all people should know what the wet will do with past experience. Just reiterating the message.

Regardless I have G3 on my corners right and they are great. Wish they where like tim tams... last forever! :)

I think it's that... since they're so good in the dry... people have some expectations of them in the wet...
Even the RTA in all its policy related ineptitude teaches people you can't drive the same way in the wet as you do in the dry... it's pretty basic and I dare say for anyone driving an MX5... obvious...

It's almost like you're saying that if someone figures that adrenalins aren't any good in the wet they had to have been driving too fast in the first place...
It doesn't really follow like that...
crap tyres are crap tyres no matter how fast you drive... (not saying that adrenalins are crap...)

All that aside... Love the story you've put together for us cheyneX5, look forward to reading more

PS is the ahstray backwards?? or is the lid backwards...?

G3's aren't that good.

RE001 are good and cheap- bang for buck it wins.

But imo Toyo R1R's are a godly street tyre, excellent in wet, and also great on dry.

What are you implying? i know your just trying to be helpful. I drive extremely cautiously in the wet, i'm not a lead foot. I am aware that no tyre will be as good in the wet that it is in the dry, i just want something that out performs others and is a good all-rounder, has to GF approved :D I'm not a fan of causing conflict with members of this forum, it's a great place to learn, chat and get great ideas. I think we leave this now and get back to main point of the thread.

All cool connico?

Thanks mate, it's always nice to hear compliments on my progress  Re the ashtray, i adjusted it to be used as a cupholder, i flipped it around by undoing the srews to take the top plate off, rotated it 180 degrees and screwed it back on. now when its open the little ash grille is hidden on the other side and it perfectly fit a take-away coffe

Yeah its was always cool, never had any issues. Everything remained nice and calm through out the discuss mate.

Regardless give the PP2's a try, I had a set to test this weekend and have to say these will be my new corners when the G3 wear themselves out.

Otherwise there are plenty of good rubber out there, would suggest taking the RE001 before dismissing them. They are good tread if treated with respect. But they are budget oriented, for those that wont pay 300+ a corner

I currently have both of these tyres, I've found the RE001 to be considerably better in the dry than the G3, but I'd take the G3 in the wet any day of the week.

Sadly PP2's aren't available in 14 inch. Its quite a hard size to find good tyres, the choice is quite limited.

I didn't want to take Cheyne's thread too off topic (sorry mate)... but just to let you know I'm not a tool. I drive carefully in the wet... It is quite easy to drive with the re001's in wet conditions and not loose any traction. However, I feel that it is important to have the best tyre possibe for these conditions in case something un expected happens.

In my opinion, based on comparisions with other tyres in the same situations the re001's are not as good as they should be in wet conditions and offer far less grip than any other tyre I've used. It's not that I try and go fast with them, its that in a brake and swerve accident avoiding situation they perform a lot worse than other tyres I've used (eg Toyo T1R's, Yokohama A539's) and lock up very easily. Under even the slightest throttle exiting corners they have a tendancy to loose all grip very quickly.

I and a fair few other people who actually own a set of re001's find them to be quite bad in the wet. Regardless of their good dry performance in the wet they are terrible, much worse than other tyres I've used (except maybe Cheyne's current hero's  ). I think that it is an important thing to make people at least aware of this opinion before they buy a set.

Wow - just read through the journey so far. Admirable that you have stuck with the beast, it's funny how often you see this with MX5's. With most other cars, the owner would have thrown in the towel already.

Hope to catch you at Garage Cafe next time i'm down there.

I'll leave you with this parting thought: 6ULs with PP2s - do it.

Matt
