Advice on car class v events
Hi all
I have a stock NA6 and want to make it a track car - unregistered. As a novice I am a bit confused between car classes and what events they are best suited to.
I would like to keep it as a 1.6 non turbo until I get the hang of it. The events I am aiming for are the NSW sprint and hill climbs and maybe the occasional trip to VIC.
It seems to be 2B, 2F are the car build classes and maybe 3A ???? The CAMS manual explains what is allowed, my difficulty is finding the event regulations and what they require.
Maybe later I will go for the big engine mods but as a start I am keeping it simple and work more with weight and handling.
Just not sure which specification regs to build the car to.

do you need a class if just starting out?
if just doing arvo sprints and club hillclimbs, the organisers don't do classes like that.
but if you planning on running state level championships straight up, then yes you'll need a class.
if it's a near stock car, then 2A is the class you'll be in. (i think)

Thanks for the reply, I can see that 2A is where I am currently at, but I would like to do a build that may take a year or so and have a plan as to which regs to comply with.
It looks like 2B has more freedom as I would like to remove passenger seat and dash and really get to a bare track car. I have given up the thought of modifications combined with trying to maintain road registered, engineer certs and insurance. That money can go to building the car.
I guess my main question is -
What events / categorys would a 2B car differ to a 2F car in respect to NSW super spints and hillclimbs.
And is the NA6 in the 1301 - 1600 or 1601 - 3000 sub class as I thought they were 1597cc
.

NA6 is in the <1600 class. For your other questions you'd be best to ask Mike Hicks from MX-5 Club NSW.

A stock MX5 is 2F. If you start removing heaps of stuff (like the seats and lights, windows interior trim) or increase capacity past 1840(ish)cc it'll be a 2B. If you then put a turbo in it (on an NA, which never came from the factory with a turbo) you'll be in 2A.
Before you spend ANY money - go to a local race meeting and talk with the guys in the pits. You sound like you are very green with this stuff, so don't waste money on something that you'll have to change later.
FYI - you will be horribly uncompetitive in a 1.6L in anything other than 2F. Unless you are a very good driver, you will also be uncompetitive in 2F with a 1.6L (I have a VERY light 1.6L racer and I'm uncompetitive in 2F).

Hi and thanks for the replys. Firstly I am in Canberra and have been out to the track afew times and only got confused. I think others had higher expectation than what i want to achieve. I only want sprint style racing - banging doors with others is not the direction i want to go. I think i actually need to sit down with someone away from the distraction of the track.
I picked the MX because it is a sound reliable car for learning good technique and I can play with the build. I could cheat and get an M3 or a WRX but I would only be fooling myself and then there is the extra $$$$.
It does sound a bit clearer by building to 2F first and that will get me out and about and learning to control it. At least I would have a plan to keep to.
I have accepted I wont be competative for a long time!! Or until the VT rusts out and I swap the LS1 into it

Don't confuse supersprint car classifications with Production sports. If you just want to do laptimes then Mx5 club and the NSW supersprint is probaly what your after.

Advice on car class v events



So at the moment i would enter Type 1A - no mods (just safety and road registered). I noticed not many enter that class but there are MX5 in the 1B class, I guess they are 1.8s?
Get some experience, and take it off the road into 3J spec and enter 3A up against swifts and dattos.
Type 1. Unmodified Production Cars where the only freedoms relate to safety, engine reconditioning, tyres and some cosmetic items
Type 3. Competition vehicles based on 3J Club Cars rules as defined in the CAMS Manual. Minor additional freedoms are allowed to recognise
that there will be some road-registered vehicles competing, that cannot meet full 3J rules.

Nah you are getting all confused. The 3J class you mention is Improved Production. Nothing to do with MX5's. Class 3 are touring cars and class 2 are sports cars. http://www.camsmanual.com.au/02_race.asp#3rd This is racing stuff, not sprints.
Contact the NSW MX5 club and go from there. My advice would be to modify the car to 2F specs as the number of people who say they want to do sprints and then end up racing is rather alarming.
At least that way you haven't wasted money on mods you will have to reverse.

Best advice I can give is to join the Canberra chapter of the MX5 club (info can be found here), come along to a meet and talk to people. There are plenty of guys in the club that run in the hillclimb series out at Sutton Road, along with a whole heap of other forms of motorsport.

I think Cal has pretty much summed it up!
I bought a 2F logged mx5 track car, but for this year Im doing supersprints so I can learn how to drive these things properly.
In my supersprints, Im in 2B due to the mods and engine size. (as stated, sprints and racing have different classes to each other)
After this year, Im lookign at doing the mx5 challenge here in NSW and hopefully other rounds/series in the 2F class as thats what mine was built to.
I bought a 2F logged mx5 track car, but for this year Im doing supersprints so I can learn how to drive these things properly.

Cal he was talking NSW supersprint classes where the number is the class ie 3 and the letter is the capacity in this case A = <1600. The classes are specified accoring to levels of mods and Class 3 is based on the 3J (IP) rules and class 4 is based on 4D (sports sedan) rules.
Hope that clarifies it. The officals can get confused however when you have a sports sedan without roof and windows!!!!
