I think you mean the splash guard? Its a plastic undertray yeah?
Stops crap going up in to the engine bay. Not necessary but sure doesn't hurt.

Sounds like the engine tray has been damaged for some reason. It is not strong enough to protect the sump. However it does help to keep road spray and dirt out of the engine bay. It can also help to keep the engine bay cooler in summer, this is probably more of an issue for those with forced inducation or where their cooling system is not quite right.
If it was me I would replace the damaged one. You should be able to get a second hand one off one of the forum sponsors for a reasonable price.

As Juffa noted it helps with engine cooling and also increases the efficiency of the A/C if you have it fitted.
