Which intake is best for me?

Hi all,

With the aussie $ doing pretty well, Im thinking about getting a CAI for my NB8B.

What im looking for is a true CAI, and something that is fairly quiet as my car is my daily drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

(Ive heard the SMB airbox fits this pretty well, but it also costs $715 + shipping :S)

I have a Loch Stewart CAI sitting round doing nothing if your interested in second hand.

rossint - does the Loch Stewart require a hole cut in the firewall? (I dont really want to have to do that as I like the idea of being able to return my car to stock if I ever decide to sell her).

16bit - You have expensive taste my friend lol. It would be nice but it's a little out of my price range.

buy a 90 degree angle silicon tube 2.5" to 3" - $30
Airfilter- $40-$50
clamps- $10
extended hose- $10

So that's like $100

I wouln't call that a CAI.

you can get ones with proper cover & they use the air hole behind the passenger side headlight.

IIRC this one above does increase the torque a bit but sends drivability & fuel economy out the window.

Yes you need a hole, you move the washer bottle and drill a hole there. You can put the bottle back and hide the hole.
Have you looked at the Jackson racing one, I always liked the look of that but if I had an NB I'd be trying to go cold side like the one pictured above but with a proper box.

Yeah Ive considered them (from Good-Win-Racing) but apparently they are only for the NB8A?

You could easily put together your own racing beat style intake and just buy the shroud from good-win.

nope, i'm onto my second cold side intake.. it actually decreases the torque. driveability and fuel eco is the same.

Theres an article on autoweek or something. They were mucking with different intake lengths and power/torque that it produces. THey found that longer passage increases torque...I've drudged it up for Mitch_F1 before, but I'm at uni right now...

Im thinking perhaps hotside as I really dont want to lose any torque (the MX doesnt have all that much to begin with lol)...

I just got off the phone with SMB... They dont make their CAI airbox anymore. So thus the search continues.

Im also looking for an enclosed filter, as Id perfer not to be defected by Mr. Plod.

This isnt as easy as I thought it might be lol

I've always thought the heat coming off the radiator onto the intake pipe would effect performance on hot side intakes? Anyone seen any tests done on this?
