That is not the firewall, the firewall is between the engine bay and the cabin, what you want is a hole in the cowl, ie between the engine bay and the windscreen wipers...

My intake is a twisted route for the piping, with the aircleaner sitting in front of the radiator, and it is exactly Gary's dimensions! But it was not easy...

You're right, I just said firewall at the time for a want of a better word.

The CAMS regs don't specifically mention the firewall, i thingk it's more to do with this:

2.6 Modifications: Any aspect relating to the construction, modification and/or preparation of the vehicle, which
is not specifically authorised in the present regulations, is forbidden.

3.10 General: Holes may be drilled for fasteners (eg, bolts, screws, rivets etc). It is permitted to cut holes of the minimum necessary dimension for the passage of wiring, and fuel, brake and oil lines/hoses.

I've never really taken anyone to task on it, but apparently others have had a ruling from CAMS officials before.

I tried to do something similar with my intake but gave up :) I may try again at alater date.

I could try and take a photo but I don't thingk you'd see much. I don't have any heater hoses so it was pretty simple. I replaced the original thermostat housing with a Nissan part (#WO80) which bolts straight on. I took the temperature sender out of the original housing and placed it in the spare hole in the block next to the housing.

I know there are adapters avaiable for those that need to keep the heater hoses.

I know what you mean.

It was a cheap shot from someone who hasn't read your class rules, I figured that you were using shorthand

I don't understand this - it's a National CAMS rulebook. It's not a QLD thing... Why are the other states not worried about playing within the rules?

Did I miss something?

I think it's just something that's got out of hand over a period of years. The main problem has been the lack of strutiny of the cars, but I believe that's all about to change, certainly in QLD. As far as I know 2010 will be a "transition" year, were competitors will be notified of any infringements and asked to comply with the class regs, or otherwise compete in another class. I think it would be a good thing for the category and hope they follow through with it. We can only hope they can get something similar happening in other states, especially NSW where it seems to be worse.

If not, I might be one of the few people racing in the 2F class at the MX5 Nationals this year :D

3.2 Aerodynamic devices:
(i) General: Any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance fitted as specified in this article:
• May not be used for mounting any additional devices or performing any alternative functions other than the channelling of air for cooling purposes.
• Must be rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car (rigidly secured means not having any degree of freedom).
• Must remain in its entirety immobile in relation to the remaining sprung parts of the car. Where an original aerodynamic device incorporates a moveable component, such adjusting mechanism must be rendered inoperative and the component fixed into position.
(ii) Front aerodynamic devices: It is permitted to fit an airdam to the front of the car, subject to the following restrictions:
• It is completely contained within the vertical projection of the original vehicle (see diagram 1).
• No part below a horizontal plane passing through the centre of the wheel hubs at their extremities may extend further rearward than the wheelarch opening at the forward point where it intersects this plane.
• No part above a horizontal plane passing through the centre of the wheel hubs shall extend into the wheelarch opening
• No undertray is permitted to the airdam.
(iii) Rear aerodynamic devices: It is permitted to fit a rear deck spoiler or wing provided it was supplied as a factory option for that particular model of vehicle or another model of the same family of vehicle. It is permissible to replace one rear aerodynamic device with another complying with the present article.

That one wasn't a factory option.

Now have a new clutch and lightened flywheel ready to go in.

The flywheel is actually a second hand one I bought from one of the other MX5 racers here in Brissy. It's a chromoly flywheel with the original 1600 ring gear attached to conform with the CAMS 2F regs. Weights in at 5.2 kg.

Image

New Exedy clutch and pressure plate, 4 puck with a clamping pressure of 2400lb, and both weigh 4.8kg. Made by NPC at Archerfield.

Image

I will weigh the original gear when it comes out tomorrow.
